Best Time to Visit Zion: Autumn Cottonwoods, Summer Narrows vs Spring Runoff & Winter

Why October and early November are the top months for Zion, combining open Narrows wading, golden cottonwoods and 22°C afternoons.

Sitting at the junction of the Mojave Desert, the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau, Zion's canyon floor (1,200m) has a much warmer, drier desert climate than Bryce Canyon or the Grand Canyon. If hiking The Narrows is at the top of your list, choosing the right month is critical.

1. The Golden Season: Autumn (Mid-September, October & Early November)

Ask any Zion park ranger for the single best time to visit and the answer is October or early November:

  • The Narrows Is Almost Always Open & Crystal Clear: both the spring snowmelt floods (April and May) and the summer afternoon monsoon flash-flood storms (July and August) are over, leaving the Virgin River in The Narrows at a gentle ankle-to-knee depth.
  • 20°C to 26°C Hiking Weather & Golden Cottonwoods: midday temperatures are ideal for climbing Scout Lookout without summer heat, and from late October through mid-November, Fremont Cottonwood and Bigtooth Maple trees along the river turn canary-gold against the crimson cliffs.

2. Spring (March, April & May): Waterfalls & Snowmelt Closures

Spring brings pleasant 18°C to 25°C days, desert wildflowers, and roaring waterfalls at Emerald Pools. However, when warm April and May days melt the winter snowpack upstream, the Virgin River often exceeds the 150 cfs safety limit, forcing the National Park Service to close The Narrows for weeks at a time in April and May (in heavy snow years it may not reopen until early June).

3. Summer Heat (June to August) & Quiet Winter Driving (December to February)

  • Summer (35°C to 40°C): start dry hikes like Scout Lookout at dawn, and spend the afternoon wading in the shaded, 18°C water of The Narrows (checking daily flash-flood forecasts during July and August monsoons).
  • Winter (Dec to Feb, Drive Your Own Car in the Canyon): in January and February (outside holiday week), you can drive your own car right up the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive with 80% fewer crowds. Check what to wear in Zion.
