Getting to Zion from Las Vegas (2.5 Hours), St. George & Salt Lake City (Plus the Time-Zone Rule)

Driving 2.5 hours up I-15 from Las Vegas into Zion, and remembering the 1-hour Mountain Time jump when crossing into Utah.

Although Zion National Park is in Utah, Las Vegas, Nevada (Harry Reid International Airport, LAS) is much closer to Zion than Salt Lake City. From the Las Vegas Strip or airport rental-car centre, it is a fast, divided four-lane motorway drive of 265 kilometres (165 miles / 2 hours 35 minutes) northeast up Interstate 15 and Utah Highway 9 straight to Springdale.

1. Crucial Rule When Driving from Las Vegas: The '1-Hour Time-Zone Jump'

Every week, travellers driving up from Las Vegas miss their morning Angels Landing permit window, e-bike rental or shuttle tour because they forget the time-zone change:

  • Nevada (Las Vegas) is on Pacific Time; Utah (Zion) is on Mountain Time (1 Hour Ahead): the moment you cross into Utah on I-15 south of St. George, your clock jumps forward by 1 full hour. That means a 2-hour-40-minute drive from Las Vegas takes 3 hours and 40 minutes on the clock heading northeast into Utah (and you gain that hour back returning to Vegas). To reach the Zion Visitor Center at dawn, leave Las Vegas before sunrise or drive up the evening before.
  • The Drive Up I-15 (Valley of Fire & Virgin River Gorge): 45 minutes north of Las Vegas, you can detour through red sandstone formations at Valley of Fire State Park; an hour later, I-15 cuts through the 500-metre limestone chasm of the Virgin River Gorge before taking Exit 16 (Utah Highway 9 East) for 45 minutes into Springdale.

2. St. George Regional Airport (SGU) & Driving from Salt Lake City (SLC)

  • St. George Regional Airport (SGU, 70 km / 45 Minutes West of Zion): served by daily flights from Salt Lake City, Denver, Phoenix and Dallas.
  • From Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC, 495 km / 4.5 Hours South on I-15): an easy drive south down I-15, letting you stop first at Kolob Canyons (Exit 40) on your way to Springdale, and loop back via Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands.
