What to Wear in Algiers

Footwear for steep Casbah steps, smart-casual city layers and respectful dress for religious sites.

Algiers is a proud, dignified Mediterranean capital where residents dress neatly when heading into the city centre. Packing smart-casual, breathable clothing alongside supportive walking shoes keeps you comfortable whether you are descending centuries-old stone steps in the Casbah or dining in the leafy hills of Hydra.

Footwear and practical clothing by season

  • Grippy, closed-toe walking shoes or trainers: the Casbah of Algiers is built on a steep 118-metre slope connected by hundreds of worn stone steps (escaliers) and uneven cobbles that can be damp in the shade. Leave smooth-soled sandals and heels behind; wear cushioned trainers or rubber-soled walking shoes with solid grip.
  • Smart-casual trousers, jeans, long skirts and breathable shirts: across Alger Centre, Hamma and Hydra, men and women generally wear smart trousers or jeans, midi or long skirts, collared shirts, blouses and light jackets. Avoid wearing beach shorts or sleeveless vests in town, as they immediately look out of place in an urban administrative capital.
  • A windbreaker or light knitwear for cliff viewpoints and winter rain: the breeze at the Martyrs' Memorial esplanade and the cliff terrace of Notre-Dame d'Afrique is noticeably cooler than down at port level, and from November to March you will want a warm jumper and a waterproof hooded jacket.

Visiting mosques and the Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique

To step inside historic mosques open to visitors, such as the restored Ketchaoua Mosque at Place des Martyrs, both men and women must cover their shoulders and legs down to the ankles, remove shoes at the entrance rack, and women should bring a headscarf to cover their hair. At the Catholic Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Afrique, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is similarly expected inside the sanctuary. Carry a light cotton scarf and a spare pair of socks in your daypack so you are always prepared for spontaneous interior visits. See seasonal weather in Algiers before packing.
