Where to Stay in Algiers: Best Areas Compared
Choosing between walkable boulevards in Alger Centre, bay-view garden hotels in Hamma and upscale Hydra.
Because Algiers rises steeply from the port to its southern residential ridges, choosing where to stay determines whether you step straight out onto pedestrian cafes and the underground Metro, or rely on taxis and cable cars from a quiet hillside enclave. Compare the four main bases below.
Alger Centre: Grande Poste, Rue Didouche Mourad and Port Said (best for walkability)
For independent travellers who enjoy exploring on foot, Alger Centre between Square Port Said, the Grande Poste and Place Audin is the most rewarding base. You are surrounded by 19th- and early-20th-century stone buildings, bookshops, patisseries and brasseries, you can walk along the white seafront arcades to the foot of the Casbah in fifteen minutes, and Tafourah-Grande Poste and Ali Boumendjel Metro stations connect you directly across the city. Several historic 19th- and 20th-century hotels here have been refurbished with double-glazed rooms and bay views.
Hamma and El Madania (botanical gardens and iconic bay views)
Directly east of the centre around the Jardin d'Essai du Hamma and the slopes rising to the Martyrs' Memorial, this quarter is home to Algiers's most famous heritage luxury hotel (the historic 1889 El Aurassi and the Moorish palace hotel St George / El Djazaïr nearby on the hill, alongside modern five-star properties overlooking the botanical gardens). With the Jardin d'Essai Metro station and the memorial cable car at the foot of the slope, it combines resort-style pools and sweeping Mediterranean panoramas with fast transit into the centre.
Hydra, Sidi Yahia and El Biar (diplomatic hills and modern dining)
Perched on the leafy upper plateau south-west of the centre, Hydra (especially around Rue Sidi Yahia and Val d'Hydra) and neighbouring El Biar form the diplomatic and upscale commercial heart of modern Algiers. While there is no Metro up on the plateau, these neighbourhoods offer quiet streets, contemporary boutique hotels, international restaurants and speciality coffee shops a short Yassir ride from downtown.
Bab Ezzouar and the Eastern Bay (airport convenience)
If you have an early morning flight from Houari Boumediene Airport or are visiting for an exhibition, the modern business district of Bab Ezzouar sits just ten minutes from the airport terminals with international chain hotels, though it is roughly twenty-five minutes from the historic centre. Fit your base into our three-day Algiers itinerary.
