Colca Canyon, Cruz del Cóndor & Chivay Guide: Condors, Terraces & Hot Springs
Plan a 1- or 2-day trip from Arequipa to the Colca Canyon (UNESCO Global Geopark): watch Andean condors at Cruz del Cóndor, cross the 4,910 m Patapampa pass, and soak in thermal baths.
Carved by the Río Colca 160 kilometres north of Arequipa in Caylloma Province, the Colca Canyon (Cañón del Colca) plunges to a depth of between 3,270 and 4,160 metres from its surrounding volcanic peaks to the river floor, making it roughly twice as deep as Arizona's Grand Canyon. Designated by UNESCO in 2019 as the Colca y Volcanes de Andagua Global Geopark, the valley combines sheer inner-gorge cliffs where wild Andean condors nest with thousands of hectares of living pre-Inca agricultural terraces and volcanic hot springs.

1. The High-Altitude Ascent via Pampa Cañahuas & Patapampa (4,910 m)
Before booking your Colca excursion, spend at least two days acclimatising at 2,335 metres in Arequipa, because the highway into the Colca Valley climbs across one of the highest paved mountain passes in the Americas:
- Pampa Cañahuas & Patahuasi: Climbing around the western flank of Nevado Chachani (6,057 m), the road crosses the golden ichu-grass plains of Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca (3,900 to 4,200 m), where wild vicuñas and domestic herds of alpacas and llamas graze, pausing at Patahuasi for a warm cup of mate de triple (coca, muña, and chachacoma herbs).
- Mirador de los Volcanes at Abra Patapampa (4,910 m / 16,109 ft): The highest point of the route offers a 360-degree panorama of eight snow-capped volcanoes, including the rising ash and steam plume of active Volcán Sabancaya (5,976 m) and Nevado Ampato (6,288 m) (where Mummy Juanita was discovered), before winding down to the market town of Chivay (3,635 m).

2. Mirador Cruz del Cóndor, Pre-Inca Terraces & Volcanic Hot Springs
- Mirador Cruz del Cóndor (3,800 m): Located forty kilometres west of Chivay between the villages of Pinchollo and Cabanaconde, this stone observation terrace looks straight down a 1,200-metre vertical abyss to the Colca River. Arrive between 08:00 and 10:00, when the morning sun warms the canyon walls and giant Andean condors (Vultur gryphus, with wingspans reaching 3.2 metres) rise effortlessly on the thermal updrafts, frequently gliding just metres above the stone parapet.
- Collagua & Cabana Terraces (Antahuilque, Choquetico, Maca & Yanque): Along the drive back toward Chivay, viewpoints at Antahuilque and Choquetico reveal amphitheatres of pre-Inca stone andenes and hanging cliff tombs built by the Collagua and Cabana cultures. Stop at the colonial white churches of Maca and Yanque, where local women wear intricately embroidered hats and vests, and unwind in the riverside volcanic thermal pools of Chacapi (Yanque) or La Calera (Chivay).

3. Choosing Between a 1-Day Tour, a 2-Day Stay, or Trekking
If you are short on time, a full-day tour departs Arequipa around 03:00 to reach Cruz del Cóndor by 08:30 and returns by 17:30. However, a 2-day / 1-night tour (sleeping at 3,600 metres in Chivay, Yanque, or Coporaque) or a 2- to 3-day trek from Cabanaconde down to the palm-fringed oasis of Sangalle (2,180 m) on the canyon floor is far more relaxed; check current AUTOCOLCA visitor ticket requirements with your operator before departing.
