Laguna de Salinas (4,300 m), Volcán Misti (5,822 m) & Chachani (6,057 m) Guide
Explore the high-Andean volcanoes and salt flats northeast of Arequipa: visit flamingo-filled Laguna de Salinas in Salinas y Aguada Blanca Reserve, or climb Misti and Chachani.
Immediately northeast of Arequipa, the city's three guardian volcanoes rise inside the 366,936-hectare Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca, established on 9 August 1979 by SERNANP to protect the high-Andean puna watershed, forests of twisted queñua (Polylepis) trees, over 12,000 wild vicuñas, and the shimmering 4,300-metre salt flat of Laguna de Salinas.

1. Laguna de Salinas (4,300 m): Flamingos, Vicuñas & Mirror Salt Flats
Located just 65 kilometres east of Arequipa via the Chiguata mountain road (a two-hour drive climbing past pre-Inca terraces and a sixteenth-century colonial church), Laguna de Salinas is a 6,182-hectare endorheic salt pan ringed by Volcán Misti (5,822 m), Pichu Pichu (5,664 m), and Ubinas (5,672 m):
- Mirror Season vs White Salt-Flat Season: From January through April, summer rains cover the salt crust with a thin sheet of water, turning the entire basin into a sky mirror that reflects the cone of Misti (much like a miniature Uyuni right outside Arequipa) and attracting up to 20,000 Andean, Chilean, and James's flamingos (parihuanas). From May through December, the water evaporates into blinding white polygons of salt crystal and boron extraction pools.
- Vicuñas, Lojen Hot Springs & Pampa Cañahuas: Full-day excursions from Arequipa circle the lagoon shore to spot wild vicuñas, llamas, and alpacas, visit the steaming turquoise geothermal pool of the Mini Volcán Lojen, and return across the puna; dress in warm windproof layers for the 4,300-metre altitude.

2. Climbing Volcán Misti (5,822 m) & Nevado Chachani (6,057 m)
For well-acclimatised hikers who have spent at least three to four days at altitude in Arequipa and the Colca Canyon, Arequipa's licensed mountain outfitters lead two classic two-day high-altitude ascents (best undertaken in the dry season from May to November):
- Volcán Misti (5,822 m / 19,101 ft, 2 Days / 1 Night): Approached by 4x4 to roughly 3,400 metres (via the Aguada Blanca or Chiguata route), climbers hike four to six hours up volcanic scree to the high camp at Nido de Águilas (4,610 m) or Monte Blanco (4,800 m). A 01:00 alpine start reaches the active fumaroles of the twin craters and the 10-metre iron summit cross (installed in 1900) for sunrise over Arequipa before a fast volcanic-sand descent.
- Nevado Chachani (6,057 m / 19,872 ft, 2 Days / 1 Night): Because 4x4 vehicles can drive up a former mining track to 5,000 metres before a short hike to Base Camp (5,150 m), Chachani is renowned as one of the world's most accessible 6,000-metre summits, requiring trekking poles, crampons in icy conditions, and a certified UIAGM/AGMP mountain guide.
