Mercado San Camilo (1881) & Traditional Picanterías Guide, Arequipa
Explore Arequipa's culinary landmarks: visit the 1881 Eiffel-roofed Mercado San Camilo for highland fruit juices and queso helado, and dine at heritage picanterías.
To taste why Arequipa was recognised by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2019 and why its Picantería Arequipeña holds official status as Cultural Heritage of Peru, start your morning under the historic iron roof of Mercado San Camilo before heading out for a long midday wood-fired lunch.

1. Mercado San Camilo (Opened 1881, Eiffel Iron Roof)
Located four blocks south of the Plaza de Armas between Calle San Camilo and Calle Perú on the former grounds of the San Camilo monastery (destroyed in the 1868 earthquake), Arequipa's central market opened in 1881, received its monumental prefabricated iron roof structure designed by Gustave Eiffel's French workshops in the early twentieth century, and was declared a Historical Monument of Peru in 1987:
- The Juice Aisle (Sección de Jugos): Pull up a stool at the colourful rows of fruit stalls, where smiling jugueras blend fresh papayita arequipeña (a small, intensely fragrant highland papaya native to the Arequipa valleys), tart Andean passionfruit (tumbo), creamy lúcuma, chirimoya, and black figs (higos), always pouring a complimentary top-up glass (la yapa).
- Artisanal Cheeses, Bread & Queso Helado: Browse towers of round queso paria and braided queso trenzado from Chuquibamba, pick up warm three-cornered pan de tres puntas, and stop by the upper-level stalls where matriarchs hand-spin cinnamon-dusted queso helado in wooden barrels.

2. How to Experience an Authentic Picantería Arequipeña
In colonial Arequipa, humble chicherías brewing purple-corn beer began serving spicy afternoon plates (picantes) to make patrons thirsty, evolving into the democratic social clubs where poets, farmers, and judges shared long wooden tables. Keep three golden rules in mind when visiting:
- Strictly a Midday Lunch Tradition (12:00 to 16:30): True picanterías do not open for dinner. Arrive between 12:30 and 14:30 to order the daily ritual soup (almuerzo, such as Tuesday Chochoca or a brimming bowl of chupe de camarones) followed by an Americano or Triple platter combining rocoto relleno, pastel de papa, chicharrón de chancho, and sarza de patitas alongside a pitcher of purple chicha de guiñapo.
- Classic Picanterías in Yanahuara, Sachaca & Centro: Within a short walk or Uber ride of the historic centre, beloved houses governed by the Sociedad Picantera de Arequipa include La Nueva Palomino and Sol de Mayo (founded 1897) in Yanahuara, La Cau Cau and La Capitana near the centre, and rural century-old La Lucila in the green district of Sachaca.
