Best Time to Visit Banjul
Guaranteed dry sunshine from November to May, migratory birds and emerald summer mangroves.
Few destinations within six hours' flying time of Europe offer more reliable dry-season sunshine than Banjul. The climate divides sharply into a seven-month rain-free dry season from November to May and a warm, lush green rainy season from mid-June to October.
November to February (Cool Dry Season & Peak Birdwatching) is the classic window to visit Banjul and the Atlantic coast. The skies are cloudless day after day, daytime temperatures sit around a comfortable 29°C to 32°C tempered by ocean breezes along Cape Point, Kotu and Kololi, and nights drop to a refreshing 17°C to 19°C, which means you can sleep comfortably and take early morning walks through Abuko Nature Reserve and Bijilo Forest Park without heavy humidity. Following the autumn rains, the freshwater pools and mangrove creeks are full of water, attracting Palearctic migratory birds from Europe alongside resident West African species.
March to May (Late Dry Season) remains completely dry along the coast, with pleasant 28°C to 31°C ocean breezes in Banjul and Bakau even as temperatures climb much higher upriver toward Janjanbureh. Because dense foliage has thinned out by spring, wildlife and monkey sightings around forest waterholes are particularly clear, and mango trees across the Kombo peninsula begin ripening toward late spring.
June to October (The Green Season / Nawett) brings warm tropical humidity (around 30°C to 32°C) and short, dramatic rain showers, peaking in August when the savannah and mangroves turn a vivid emerald green and resident weaver birds, kingfishers and bishops molt into their brilliant breeding plumage. Because tropical downpours often fall at night or in late afternoon bursts, mornings remain bright for creek excursions, hotels offer low-season rates across Kololi and Kotu, and Albert Market and Arch 22 are relaxed and uncrowded for travellers who enjoy warm green coastal landscapes.
