Best Time to Visit Brasília: Blue-Sky Dry Season, Ipê Blossoms & Climate

Month-by-month weather guide to Brasília using official 1991-2020 INMET normals: compare the cloudless May-September dry season, Ipê tree blossoms, and summer rains.

Perched at 1,172 metres above sea level on Brazil's central plateau, Brasília enjoys a mild tropical highland savanna climate (Köppen Aw) famous for its vast, theatrical skies. According to official 1991 to 2020 INMET climate normals, temperatures remain comfortable all year (daytime highs stay between 25.3°C in June and 29.1°C in September), while the year divides cleanly into two distinct halves based on rainfall.

May to Early September: The Cloudless Dry Season and Ipê Blossoms

From May through August, rain virtually disappears from the central plateau (averaging just 1 rain day in June, 0 days in July, and 1 day in August):

  • May to July (Mild, Crisp, and Sunny): The single best time for architectural photography and outdoor sightseeing. Afternoon highs sit at a pleasant 25.3°C to 26.0°C under intense cobalt-blue skies that make Oscar Niemeyer's white marble palaces glow, while evenings dip to a refreshing 13.9°C to 15.6°C (pack a light jumper for sunset at Pontão do Lago Sul). It is also peak hiking season in Chapada dos Veadeiros and Pirenópolis, with zero flash-flood risk in the canyons.
  • July to September (The Season of the Ipês): Even as the savanna grass dries out and afternoon humidity drops below 25 percent in August and September, thousands of native Ipê trees erupt into sequential waves of purple (June and July), brilliant golden yellow (July and August), pink, and pure white (September) across every Superquadra and avenue.

October to April: The Green Cerrado Season and Dramatic Clouds

When the tropical rains return between October and April (peaking from November to March with 15 to 19 rain days per month), the dry plateau transforms overnight into a lush emerald park, and afternoon humidity returns to a comfortable 65 to 75 percent. Showers usually arrive as brief, dramatic late-afternoon thunderstorms prefaced by towering cumulus clouds that reflect in the water mirrors of Palácio do Itamaraty and the Cathedral.
