Lake Paranoá, Pontão do Lago Sul & Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge Guide

Explore Brasília's 48-square-kilometre artificial lake: cross the award-winning 2002 Ponte JK, walk the lakeside promenade of Pontão do Lago Sul, and visit Ermida Dom Bosco.

Wrapping around the eastern edge of the Plano Piloto like a giant blue horseshoe, the 48-square-kilometre expanse of Lago Paranoá was first envisioned in 1894 by the Cruls Geographic Commission and brought to life in September 1959 when engineers closed the Paranoá Dam. With 80 kilometres of shoreline, the lake humidifies Brasília's dry highland air and serves as the capital's favourite waterfront playground for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, boat cruises, and sunset dining.

1. Ponte Juscelino Kubitschek (Ponte JK, 2002)

Inaugurated on 15 December 2002 and awarded the international Gustav Lindenthal Medal at the 2003 International Bridge Conference, the Ponte Juscelino Kubitschek (Ponte JK) is a contemporary engineering triumph worthy of Niemeyer's skyline. Designed by Rio de Janeiro architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mário Vila Verde, the bridge spans 1,200 metres across the southern arm of Lago Paranoá.

Its 720-metre central span is suspended by steel cables from three 61-metre-tall asymmetric steel arches that leap diagonally from one side of the roadway to the other, mimicking the arc of a flat pebble skipping three times across the surface of the water. Walk or cycle across its dedicated pedestrian path in the late afternoon, or stay until dusk when floodlights reflect the three white arches in the dark water below.

2. Pontão do Lago Sul: Brasília's Waterfront Promenade

On the southern shore of the lake just west of Ponte JK, Pontão do Lago Sul is a manicured lakeside park and boardwalk with free entry, royal palm avenues, boat piers, and a row of indoor-outdoor restaurants and kiosks looking north across the water toward the TV Tower and National Congress.

  • How to Enjoy the Lake: Rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak from the lakeside clubs near Ponte JK, board a one-hour sightseeing boat cruise under the bridge arches from the Pontão pier, or claim a waterfront table at 17:00 for sunset drinks.

3. Ermida Dom Bosco (1957): The 15th Parallel Viewpoint

At the easternmost tip of the lake inside the Parque Ecológico Dom Bosco, a quiet wooded headland holds the Ermida Dom Bosco, designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1957 as the very first religious structure built in the Federal District. The minimalist white marble inclined pyramid sits directly on the 15th Parallel South, where Italian saint Giovanni Bosco dreamt in 1883 of a future civilization arising between the 15th and 20th parallels, and looks straight west across the water toward the entire length of the Monumental Axis.
