Monumental Axis Guide: Cathedral of Brasília, Museu Nacional & Praça dos Três Poderes

Walk the eastern Monumental Axis of Brasília from Oscar Niemeyer's hyperboloid Cathedral and the white dome of Museu Nacional to Praça dos Três Poderes.

The eastern two kilometres of the Eixo Monumental form the ceremonial heart of Brasília. Moving eastward from the central bus platform toward the shores of Lake Paranoá, the wide green lawn of the Esplanada dos Ministérios links Oscar Niemeyer's most expressive religious and cultural buildings with the symbolic triangular plaza of Praça dos Três Poderes.

Overview of the Eastern Civic Esplanade

The Esplanada dos Ministérios forms the ceremonial heart of the 1960 capital.

1. Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida (1958 to 1970)

With its cornerstone laid on 12 September 1958 and its doors inaugurated on 31 May 1970, the Cathedral of Brasília won Oscar Niemeyer the 1988 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Rather than a traditional enclosed box, Niemeyer and structural engineer Joaquim Cardozo designed a 70-metre-diameter circular ring of sixteen 90-tonne curved hyperboloid concrete columns rising 40 metres into the sky like two hands reaching toward heaven.

  • The Sculptural Approach and Interior: Outside the entrance stand four 3-metre bronze statues of the Four Evangelists sculpted by Alfredo Ceschiatti in 1968, alongside four giant bell-shaped concrete chimes. You enter through a dim, descending subterranean tunnel paved in black marble before emerging into a flood of natural light beneath Marianne Peretti's 1990 fibreglass stained-glass triangles in shades of sky blue, emerald green, and white, where three aluminium angels by Ceschiatti float overhead on steel cables. Around the perimeter walls shine geometric ceramic tiles painted by Athos Bulcão.

2. Complexo Cultural da República (Museu Nacional & Biblioteca Nacional)

Directly south across the plaza from the Cathedral stands the Complexo Cultural da República, completed in 2006 from Niemeyer's original sketches. Its centrepiece is the Museu Nacional Honestino Guimarães, a pure white concrete hemisphere circled by anexternal sweeping planetary ramp that hosts major Brazilian contemporary art exhibitions, paired with the clean rectangular prism of the Biblioteca Nacional de Brasília.

3. Praça dos Três Poderes: Where the Three Branches Meet

The eastern plaza anchors the three branches of government.

4. Panteão da Pátria and Espaço Lúcio Costa

At the eastern end of the ministries esplanade, the grass opens into the vast white stone expanse of Praça dos Três Poderes, conceived by Lúcio Costa and Niemeyer so the three constitutional powers of the Republic face one another across a public square with zero fences:

  • Palácio do Planalto (North): The official workplace of the President of the Republic, supported by feather-light white marble columns and a ceremonial ramp.
  • Supremo Tribunal Federal (South): The seat of the highest court, fronted by Ceschiatti's blindfolded granite statue A Justiça (1961).
  • Os Candangos, Espaço Lúcio Costa & Panteão da Pátria: In the centre of the plaza, don't miss Bruno Giorgi's 8-metre bronze sculpture Os Guerreiros (Os Candangos) honouring the workers who built the capital, descend into the underground Espaço Lúcio Costa to view the 179-square-metre architectural scale model of Brasília, and step inside the dove-shaped Panteão da Pátria Tancredo Neves to see the Steel Book of National Heroes.
