Best Time to Visit Colombo

Choosing between the sunny January to March dry season, festive February and May, and monsoon months.

Lying just seven degrees north of the equator on the western coast of Sri Lanka, Colombo is warm and tropical year-round, with daytime temperatures hovering steadily between 30°C and 32°C and ocean-cooled nights around 24°C to 26°C. What changes across the calendar is not the thermometer, but the rhythm of the two Indian Ocean monsoons and the island's Buddhist festivals.

Main Dry Season (January to March) brings the clearest blue skies, calmest seas and lowest rainfall on the west and south coasts, averaging just 4 to 7 wet days a month. Afternoon walks through Pettah Bazaar and Fort are dry and bright, and sunsets over Galle Face Green are reliably golden. On the February full moon (Navam Poya), Gangaramaya Temple stages the Navam Perahera, a grand evening procession of Kandyan drummers, fire dancers, whip-crackers and ceremonial tuskers parading around Beira Lake.

Inter-Monsoon & New Year (April and May) are the warmest and most humid months of the year, with pre-monsoon afternoon tropical downpours building in May. Mid-April marks the Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Avurudu), when many family shops in Pettah close for a few days and households prepare sweet kevum oil cakes and coconut-milk rice (kiribath). On the full moon of May, Colombo transforms for Vesak: giant illuminated bamboo-and-paper lantern installations (pandals and kudu) line the streets around Beira Lake and Bauddhaloka Mawatha, and free food stalls (dansalas) hand out ice cream, chickpeas and tea to passers-by.

Mid-Year Dry Window (July to September) is an underrated second sweet spot for Colombo. Once the initial burst of the south-west monsoon eases after May and June, July and August enjoy plenty of sunny mornings and fresh sea breezes, making it easy to pair a few days in Colombo with Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle and east coast.

Autumn Inter-Monsoon (October and November) is statistically the wettest period in Colombo, when heavy late-afternoon and evening tropical thunderstorms roll in off the ocean, before drier north-east breezes clear the skies again by mid-December. Check what to wear in Colombo before packing.
