Where to Stay in Colombo: Best Areas by Postal District
Comparing oceanfront Galle Face and Fort with the leafy boutique bungalows of Cinnamon Gardens.
Choosing where to sleep in Colombo is simple once you decide whether you want an Indian Ocean sunset view right outside your lobby or a leafy low-rise garden bungalow tucked away on a quiet residential street. Because metered app tuk-tuks take only ten to fifteen minutes between Colombo 1 and Colombo 7 outside rush hour, any of these four neighbourhoods makes an effortless base.
Galle Face and Fort (Colombo 1 & northern Colombo 3: best for ocean views and rail travellers)
Stretching from the heritage core of Colombo Fort down the Galle Face Green esplanade, this is the most iconic strip for a two- or three-night stay. At the southern end stands the 1864 Galle Face Hotel, one of Asia's oldest grand colonial seafront hotels with a saltwater pool right above the surf, while modern international luxury towers line the promenade looking toward the Port City horizon. Staying in Fort or Galle Face means you can stroll to sunset prawn-cake carts, dine in the courtyards of the Old Dutch Hospital and reach Colombo Fort Railway Station in under ten minutes for early-morning trains to Kandy or Galle.
Cinnamon Gardens and Kollupitiya (Colombo 7 & Colombo 3: best for boutique bungalows and cafes)
If you prefer shaded banyan trees, contemporary art galleries and quiet residential lanes over high-rise oceanfront towers, base yourself in Cinnamon Gardens (Colombo 7) or adjoining inland Kollupitiya / Bambalapitiya (Colombo 3 and 4). Here, former colonial planters' townhouses and mid-century modernist homes have been converted into intimate 5- to 15-room boutique hotels with tropical courtyard pools and frangipani gardens. You are within walking distance of the Colombo National Museum, Viharamahadevi Park, Geoffrey Bawa's Number 11 and Gallery Cafe, and Colombo's best artisan coffee shops and design stores.
Beira Lake and Kompannavidiya / Slave Island (Colombo 2: best for central mid-range stays)
Wrapped around the peninsulas and canals of Beira Lake between Galle Face Green and Gangaramaya Temple, Colombo 2 combines modern high-rise aparthotels and reliable mid-range business hotels with historic vernacular lanes, lake boardwalks to Seema Malaka and shopping malls. It sits right at the geographic midpoint between Pettah in the north and Cinnamon Gardens in the south.
Mount Lavinia (southern coast: best for a sandy beach and colonial romance)
Roughly 12 kilometres south of Fort along the coastal railway line, Mount Lavinia centres on a rocky headland crowned by the whitewashed 1806 residence of British Governor Sir Thomas Maitland. While central Colombo's coastline at Galle Face is a seawall promenade rather than a swimming beach, Mount Lavinia has a wide golden beach lined with casual seafood shacks on the sand, connected straight into Fort by a scenic twenty-five-minute coastal train ride.
