What to Wear in Colombo

Lightweight natural fabrics for equatorial warmth, temple dress etiquette and slip-on footwear.

Packing for Colombo means dressing for consistent equatorial warmth (around 30°C to 32°C every month of the year) paired with high coastal humidity, sudden tropical rain showers, and strict modesty rules whenever you enter a Buddhist temple, Hindu kovil or mosque.

Breathable fabrics, footwear and tropical rain gear

  • 100% linen, lightweight cotton and moisture-wicking weaves: synthetic fabrics trap heat quickly along the sunny pavements of Fort and Pettah. Pack loose linen shirts, airy cotton trousers, midi dresses and culottes in pale colours that breathe in the sea breeze.
  • Sturdy leather sandals or breathable trainers that slip off easily: you will take off your shoes and socks completely before stepping onto the grounds of Buddhist temples and Hindu shrines. Choose sandals without fiddly buckles, and carry a spare pair of thin cotton socks in your bag in case stone courtyards are hot under the midday sun.
  • A compact umbrella and light cotton overshirt: even in the drier months, a brief tropical shower can blow in off the Indian Ocean, while Colombo's museums, hotel lobbies and first-class train carriages to Kandy run fierce air-conditioning.

Temple dress rules at Gangaramaya and Seema Malaka

Sri Lankan religious sites enforce dress etiquette attentively, and you will be turned away at the gate if your outfit falls short. To enter Gangaramaya Temple, Seema Malaka or the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, both men and women must have shoulders and knees fully covered (no sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, short shorts or mini skirts, and avoid tight gym leggings or clothing printed with Buddha images). Locals traditionally wear modest white clothing when visiting temples, especially on full-moon Poya days. Always remove hats and sunglasses alongside your shoes before entering shrine rooms, and never pose for photographs with your back turned directly to a statue of the Buddha (stand slightly to the side instead). Review Colombo's seasonal weather before you travel.
