Where to Stay in Dubai: Downtown, Marina, Palm and Old Dubai Compared
Five very different Dubai areas compared so you pick the right base for beaches or sightseeing.
Because Dubai is 35 kilometres long, choosing where to sleep comes down to whether you want an urban sightseeing and Metro trip (stay in Downtown/DIFC or Al Seef on the Creek) or a beach, pool and waterfront resort holiday (stay in Dubai Marina/JBR, Jumeirah or Palm Jumeirah). On a 4- to 6-day trip, many travellers even split their stay between two nights near the Creek/Downtown and three nights by the beach.
1. Downtown Dubai and DIFC (Best central base for first-timers and Metro access)
Right in the middle of the city map around the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar and Dubai Opera, with DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) and the Museum of the Future two stops north. You sit equidistant (15 to 20 minutes by Metro or taxi) between Old Dubai in the north and Dubai Marina in the south. Note that Downtown has rooftop pools rather than beaches.
2. Dubai Marina and JBR (Best for walkable evenings and beach + city mix)
One of the most pedestrian-friendly areas in the emirate: you can walk directly from your hotel onto the public sand at JBR Beach, stroll the 7 km traffic-free Marina Walk around the yacht basin, cross the footbridge to Bluewaters Island, and connect to the Red Line Metro at Sobha Realty or DMCC stations. See our Marina guide.
3. Palm Jumeirah (Best for self-contained luxury beach resorts)
Lined along the outer crescent and trunk with five-star beachfront resorts featuring private calm-water lagoon beaches, infinity pools and celebrity chef restaurants. Keep in mind that staying out on the outer crescent adds 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or monorail every time you leave the island to sightsee in town.
4. Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim (Best for low-rise coastal calm)
Between Downtown and the Palm along Jumeirah Beach Road (around Kite Beach, Madinat Jumeirah and the Four Seasons/Mandarin Oriental stretch). Low-rise villas, independent coffee roasters, open Gulf beaches (rather than enclosed lagoon water) and quick 15-minute taxi rides into Downtown, though there is no Metro line along the coast road.
5. Al Seef, Bur Dubai and Deira Creek (Best for heritage charm and value)
Along the saltwater banks of Dubai Creek, especially the restored coral-stone waterfront of Al Seef next to Al Fahidi. Nightly hotel rates are a fraction of beach-resort prices, DXB Airport is only 15 minutes away, and you can walk straight out to the abras, souks and Green/Red Metro stations.
