Çalış Beach Sunset Promenade, Water Taxis and Car-Free Şövalye Island
Riding the harbour water taxi to Çalış Beach's four-kilometre sunset promenade and car-free Şövalye Island.
Curving around the northern shore of the Gulf of Fethiye five kilometres across the water from downtown stands Çalış Beach (Çalış Plajı), paired just offshore with the narrow, pine-covered silhouette of Şövalye Island (Knight Island). Because Çalış faces due west-southwest across the bay toward the open sea and the islands, it catches a cooling afternoon thermal breeze (making it 3°C fresher than inland Fethiye Town in July and August) and delivers the most famous sunset panorama on the coast.
1. Taking the Water Taxi (Dolmuş Boat) from Fethiye Kordon to Çalış
While regular road dolmuş minibuses run between Fethiye Town and Çalış every 10 minutes, the most scenic way to cross is on the wooden Çalış Water Taxi (Deniz Dolmuşu). Departing every 30 minutes from the pier along the Fethiye Kordon (right opposite the cultural centre / tourist office) from morning until late evening between May and October, the flat-bottomed boat chugs for 25 minutes across the bay and up the reed-lined Çalış Canal (where loggerhead sea turtles, Caretta caretta, frequently surface in the morning) to the bridge at the southern end of Çalış Beach.
2. Walking the 4-Kilometre Çalış Promenade and Koca Çalış
Stretching north from the canal bridge is a flat, car-free four-kilometre beachfront promenade lined with palm trees, casual bistros and sunloungers on a broad shingle-and-sand beach. Behind the southern end of the promenade lies the Çalış Bird Sanctuary (Kuş Cenneti) wetland lagoon, home to herons, kingfishers and egrets. If you keep walking (or cycling) north past the main hotel strip to Koca Çalış and Karataş Beach, the shoreline opens into a wide, uncrowded stretch of sand with kitesurfing schools and relaxed sunset beach clubs.
3. Car-Free Şövalye Island (Şövalye Adası, 5 minutes by Boat from Çalış)
Acting as a natural one-mile-long breakwater right across the channel from Çalış is Şövalye Island (ancient Makri Island), named after the 15th-century Knights of Rhodes who fortified its ridge. There are zero cars and zero roads on the island; a single shaded stone footpath winds from north to south past 19th-century summer villas, Roman cisterns, submerged Byzantine wall mosaics right in the shallow swimming coves, and a handful of peaceful boutique hotels and waterfront restaurants. Small shuttle boats cross continuously in 5 minutes from the pier at the southern end of Çalış (near Mutlu / Shato pier).
