Fethiye: What to Know Before You Go

How Fethiye's harbour bay and the outer Ölüdeniz coast fit together, transport cards and water shoes.

Short answer: understand that Fethiye Town sits on a calm, island-sheltered gulf while Ölüdeniz sits 14 kilometres south over the mountain on the open turquoise sea, tap a contactless bank card on the white dolmuş minibuses linking them every ten minutes, and bring strapped rubber water shoes if you plan to walk through Saklıkent Gorge.

How Fethiye's Geography Works: Two Different Coastlines

Visitors often confuse Fethiye Town with Ölüdeniz because postcards of Fethiye almost always show the white sandspit of the Blue Lagoon. In reality, the region consists of four distinct zones connected by a 15- to 25-minute mountain road:

  • 1. Fethiye Town & Karagözler (On the Gulf of Fethiye): a working port city of 170,000 people wrapped around a deep natural bay protected from open-sea waves by Knight Island (Şövalye Adası) and the 12 Islands. There is no beach right in the town centre, but it has a six-kilometre palm-lined seafront promenade (Kordon), the Lycian Rock Tombs, Paspatur Old Town and the Fish Market.
  • 2. Çalış Beach (5 km north of town along the same bay): a four-kilometre sand-and-shingle beach facing due west across the gulf, connected to Fethiye Town by a flat cycle path and regular water taxis.
  • 3. Hisarönü, Ovacık & Kayaköy (In the high pine plateau, 8 km south): cooler hillside villages sitting halfway up the mountain pass, including the stone ghost village of Kayaköy.
  • 4. Ölüdeniz, Faralya & Kabak (14 to 28 km south on the open Mediterranean): where the mountains plunge straight into glowing turquoise water at the Blue Lagoon and Butterfly Valley.

Cards, Lira Cash and Avoiding the Wrong Boat Trip

Contactless Visa and Mastercard cards work on all Muğla municipal buses, airport shuttles and white dolmuş minibuses. Note that Fethiye has two completely different boat trip routes: boats departing from Fethiye Harbour sail calm, pine-fringed bays around the 12 Islands, whereas boats departing from Ölüdeniz Beach sail beneath vertical cliffs to Butterfly Valley and St Nicholas Island, never confuse the two departure piers.
