Where to Stay in Florence: Best Areas North and South of the Arno

Five central Florence districts compared for walking access, night noise and character.

Because central Florence is so walkable, you do not need to stay on top of the Cathedral to be five or ten minutes from the sights. In fact, sleeping a few streets away from the Duomo to Ponte Vecchio corridor gives you quieter nights and far better neighbourhood coffee bars and trattorias.

1. Historic Core: Duomo, Via Tornabuoni and Piazza della Signoria (Best for a short first stay)

Waking up here puts the Cathedral, the Uffizi and the luxury boutiques of Via de' Tornabuoni right outside your door. Choose a side lane or a higher floor with double glazing, as street-cleaning carts and morning deliveries start early on the stone paving.

2. Oltrarno: Santo Spirito, San Frediano and San Niccolò (Best for atmosphere and dining)

Just across the Ponte Vecchio or Ponte Santa Trinita on the south bank of the Arno. By day you share the streets with artisan restorers and locals shopping at Piazza Santo Spirito; by evening you are surrounded by Florence's best wine bars and family trattorias. San Niccolò at the eastern end sits right below the stepped green ramps up to Piazzale Michelangelo. See our Oltrarno guide.

3. Santa Croce and Sant'Ambrogio (Best balance of central sights and local life)

Ten minutes east of Piazza della Signoria on flat streets. Around Piazza Santa Croce you are close to the Bargello and Uffizi, while a five-minute walk further east into Sant'Ambrogio brings you to the covered morning food market, traditional trattorie and fewer tour groups.

4. Santa Maria Novella and the Arno Lungarni (Best for train arrivals and day trips)

Ideal if you are arriving by Tram T2 from the airport or high-speed train and planning day trips to Siena, Pisa or Lucca. Book near the handsome marble facade of Piazza di Santa Maria Novella or south toward the Lungarno riverfront rather than on the noisy station backstreets of Via Nazionale.

5. San Marco and Santissima Annunziata (Best for quiet museum access)

Just north of the Duomo around the Accademia Gallery, the Convent of San Marco and the Renaissance arcades of Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. Calm in the evenings and steps from the Mercato Centrale.
