3 Days in Helsinki: Senate Square, Suomenlinna, Oodi and Saunas

Three unhurried days linking neoclassical squares, island fortresses, modern timber architecture and saunas.

This three-day itinerary groups Helsinki's compact peninsula into walkable zones so you spend Day 1 on the historic eastern harbour and fortress islands, Day 2 in the modern architectural core and seaside saunas, and Day 3 exploring the Design District and Kallio (or sailing across to Tallinn or Old Porvoo). Before Day 1, reserve your two-hour sauna slot at Löyly and download the HSL app.

Day 1: Senate Square, National Library, Old Market Hall & Suomenlinna Fortress

  • Morning: start on Senate Square to visit white Helsinki Cathedral, step next door into the free Corinthian rotunda of the National Library of Finland, and cross to Katajanokka to see the golden domes of Uspenski Cathedral and the Art Nouveau facades of Luotsikatu.
  • Midday: walk down to the harbour for a steaming bowl of creamy salmon soup (lohikeitto) and dark rye bread inside the 1889 Old Market Hall (Vanha kauppahalli).
  • Midday: use your regular HSL Zone AB ticket to board the 15-minute municipal ferry from the Market Square to UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna Sea Fortress; spend three hours walking the Blue Route past the Great Courtyard, dry dock, stone tunnels and the King's Gate.
  • Evening: return to the harbour for an evening swim and steam at Allas Sea Pool, followed by dinner along Esplanadi.

Day 2: Oodi Central Library, Rock Church, Sibelius Park & Löyly Sauna

  • Morning: walk through Eliel Saarinen's Central Railway Station to Citizens' Square to explore all three floors of Oodi Central Library (and contemporary art next door at Kiasma).
  • Midday: walk ten minutes west to the subterranean domes of Amos Rex, step inside the curved wooden Kamppi Chapel of Silence, and continue up Fredrikinkatu to the granite bedrock walls of the Temppeliaukio Rock Church.
  • Afternoon: stroll west to Sibelius Park to see the 600-pipe Sibelius Monument and enjoy a hot cinnamon bun by the open lakeside fire at the red cottage of Café Regatta (adding a walk across the wooden bridge onto Seurasaari Island in fine weather).
  • Evening: ride Tram 6 south to Hernesaari for your pre-booked sunset session in the smoke sauna and Baltic plunge at Löyly.

Day 3: Design District & Kallio (or Day Trip to Tallinn / Old Porvoo)
