Best Time to Visit Helsinki: Vappu, White Nights and the Frozen Baltic

Choosing between 19-hour summer days on the islands, the 1 May Vappu carnival or steaming winter saunas.

At 60 degrees north latitude on the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki is the northernmost capital in the European Union (second only to Reykjavik in Europe). That latitude creates two completely distinct cities across the year: a bright, maritime summer city where the sun stays up for nearly 19 hours a day, and a crisp, snow-covered winter city where locals walk on the frozen Baltic Sea and steam in wood-fired saunas. For warm weather and open archipelago waterbuses, visit between mid-May and mid-September.

Late Spring and Vappu (May and early June) kicks off on the afternoon of 30 April and 1 May with Vappu (Walpurgis / May Day), Helsinki's biggest street festival. Tens of thousands of locals and university graduates wearing white student caps (ylioppilaslakki) gather around the Havis Amanda fountain by the Market Square before filling Kaivopuisto and Ullanlinnanmäki park on the morning of 1 May for champagne picnics, brass bands, sima (homemade lemon mead) and sugar-coated tippaleipä funnel cakes. By late May, lilacs bloom across Suomenlinna and temperatures reach 15°C to 19°C.

High Summer (June, July and August) brings comfortable highs of 20°C to 24°C and white nights around Midsummer Eve (Juhannusaatto, the Friday between 19 and 25 June), when a giant bonfire is lit off Seurasaari Island. In July and August, waterbuses run every half hour to Lonna, Vallisaari and Pihlajasaari, and late August culminates in the two-week Helsinki Festival (Helsingin juhlaviikot) and the Night of the Arts.

Autumn (September and October) sees golden birch and maple foliage (ruska) around Töölönlahti Bay, chanterelle mushroom menus and October's 280-year-old Baltic Herring Market (Silakkamarkkinat) at the South Harbour.

Winter and Lux Helsinki (December to March) drops temperatures to -7°C to 0°C. In December, the Helsinki Christmas Market (Tuomaan Markkinat) fills Senate Square with wooden stalls and hot berry glögi; in early January, the five-day Lux Helsinki light art festival illuminates buildings across the dark afternoon sky; and in February, cold-water plunging at Löyly and Allas is at its peak.
