What to Wear in Helsinki: Archipelago Wind, Sauna Gear and Winter Ice Grips
Packing for Baltic island breezes, year-round sauna plunges and sub-zero winter streets.
Finns dress with practical, unfussy functionality: even at the National Opera or fine-dining restaurants around Esplanadi, you will see smart-casual knitwear, well-cut dark trousers and clean weatherproof ankle boots rather than formal evening wear. Because Helsinki sits on a granite peninsula surrounded on three sides by the open Gulf of Finland, the sea breeze is always a factor.
Three Items to Pack in Every Season
- Swimwear (even in January or February): Helsinki's flagship seaside saunas, Löyly and Allas Sea Pool, are mixed-gender and require a swimsuit in the steam rooms and outdoor pools twelve months of the year. (If you also have a pair of rubber flip-flops or neoprene swim socks for walking across cold wooden decks to the Baltic ladder in winter, slip them into your bag).
- A windproof outer jacket with a hood: standing on the deck of the Suomenlinna ferry or walking the exposed coastal bastions of Kustaanmiekka and Kaivopuisto always feels cooler than in sheltered inner-city streets.
- Flat, supportive rubber-soled shoes: Senate Square, the Market Square and the tunnels and ramparts of Suomenlinna are paved in rough granite cobbles and gravel paths.
Season-by-Season Packing Guide
- Summer (June to August): breathable cotton and linen shirts, T-shirts, sunglasses, sunscreen, a light cardigan or denim jacket for 14°C white-night evenings, and a sleep eye-mask if before dawn sunrises wake you through hotel curtains.
- Spring and Autumn (April to May, September to October): a waterproof hooded trench or shell jacket, a merino wool jumper, a warm scarf and water-resistant leather trainers or boots.
- Winter (November to March): when temperatures sit between -10°C and 0°C with a sharp Baltic windchill, layer up properly: thermal merino wool base layers (top and leggings), a thick wool sweater or fleece mid-layer, and a knee-length windproof down parka, plus a fleece-lined wool beanie hat, insulated mittens (warmer than fingered gloves), thick wool socks and waterproof winter boots. If sidewalks are icy between January and March, pick up a pair of slip-on rubber shoe spikes (liukuesteet) at any supermarket or pharmacy. Check seasonal weather before flying.
