Best Time to Visit Kathmandu: Clear Himalayan Skies and Festivals

Choosing between crisp post-monsoon autumn skies, warm spring blossom months and sunny winter days.

Because the Kathmandu Valley sits at a moderate 1,400 metres while the high Himalayan giants rise beyond its northern rim, the valley itself enjoys a mild, temperate climate year-round, never freezing in winter and staying far cooler than the Indian plains in summer.

Late September to November (autumn) is the premier season to visit Kathmandu. Summer monsoon rains wash dust from the atmosphere, leaving crystal-clear morning skies when the snow peaks of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung and Dorje Lakpa shine along the northern horizon from Swayambhunath and Nagarkot. Daytime temperatures hover around a comfortable twenty-two to twenty-six degrees Celsius, and Nepal's two biggest annual festivals, Dashain and Tihar (the five-day festival of marigold garlands, oil lamps and clay-painted mandalas), transform every courtyard in Patan and Bhaktapur.

March to May (spring) is the second great travelling window. Afternoons warm to twenty-five to twenty-nine degrees, jacaranda trees bloom purple around Durbar Marg and Kaiser Mahal, and the lively chariot processions of Bisket Jatra (Newari New Year in Bhaktapur in mid-April), Rato Machhindranath Jatra in Patan and Buddha Jayanti (the full-moon birthday of the Buddha in May, when Boudhanath Stupa is draped in saffron banners) bring music to the squares.

December to February (winter) is a secret favourite for cultural travellers who are not trekking high alpine passes. While nights and early mornings are crisp (dipping to three to six degrees Celsius), midday sunshine warms rooftop cafes to eighteen to twenty degrees with virtually zero rain and far quieter heritage squares.

June to early September (monsoon) brings warm afternoons and frequent evening or overnight rain showers that turn the terraced rice fields around Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan brilliant emerald green, along with spirited late-summer festivals like Indra Jatra (when the Living Goddess Kumari is drawn through Kathmandu Durbar Square in a wooden chariot). See what to pack for each season.
