Where to Stay in Kathmandu: Thamel, Boudha, Patan and Lazimpat

Choosing between central Thamel and Lazimpat garden hotels, tranquil Boudha monasteries and historic Patan courtyards.

Because Ring Road traffic between different corners of the Kathmandu Valley can slow down during morning and late-afternoon rush hours, choosing the right neighbourhood base shapes the entire mood of your stay. Even many longtime visitors split a four-night trip between two bases, such as two nights in central Kathmandu or Patan and two nights by Boudhanath Stupa or Bhaktapur.

Thamel, Jyatha & Kaiser Mahal (Best for First-Timers, Walkability & Trekking Gear)

Sitting fifteen minutes' walk north of Kathmandu Durbar Square via Asan Tole, Thamel has been the classic travellers' hub since the 1970s. While its central lanes are packed with down-jacket outfitters, bookshops, currency changers and bakery cafes, the secret to sleeping well in Thamel is booking a hotel tucked inside a walled garden compound around Kaiser Mahal (beside the Garden of Dreams), Chaksibari Marg or the quieter southern lanes of Jyatha.

Lazimpat & Baber Mahal (Best for Leafy Boutique Hotels & Fine Dining)

Immediately north of the former Narayanhiti Palace Museum, Lazimpat is Kathmandu's diplomatic and upscale hotel avenue, home to historic garden hotels, organic farmers' markets and contemporary Nepali tasting-menu restaurants, while the restored Rana-era neoclassical courtyards of Baber Mahal south of the centre offer quiet artisanal shopping and dining.

Boudhanath (Best for Peaceful Mornings, Monasteries & Airport Access)

If you find central Kathmandu's horn-honking lanes tiring, base yourself in Boudha around the Great Stupa. Once you step through the outer gate into the pedestrian ring around the stupa or the garden lanes leading to Shechen Monastery, cars disappear completely. You can walk the dawn and dusk kora steps from your guesthouse door, dine on Tibetan rooftop terraces, and reach Tribhuvan International Airport in fifteen minutes.

Patan / Lalitpur & Bhaktapur (Best for Newari Architecture & Heritage Courtyards)

For cultural immersion, stay inside a restored centuries-old Newari brick-and-timber courtyard residence within a three-minute walk of Patan Durbar Square or the Golden Temple: once day-trippers leave in late afternoon, you have the carved temples and bronze workshops to yourself, along with Kathmandu's liveliest contemporary cafe scene in nearby Jhamsikhel.
