Best Time to Visit Lusaka
Mild highland winters, purple jacaranda blossom in spring and how Lusaka's seasons match Zambian safaris.
Because Lusaka sits on a breezy limestone plateau at 1,280 metres above sea level, its temperatures are far milder year-round than the low-lying river valleys of the Zambezi and Luangwa. Zambia divides its year into three distinct tropical highland seasons: the cool dry winter (May to August), the hot dry spring (September and October), and the warm green rainy season (November to April).
Cool Dry Season (May to August) is the most comfortable time to explore Lusaka on foot and the start of the classic Zambian walking-safari season. Rain is virtually zero from May right through September, humidity is low, and daytime highs settle at a pleasant 23°C to 26°C under bright skies. Mornings and evenings in June and July are brisk (dropping to 9°C or 10°C overnight), making outdoor firepits at lodges in Kabulonga and bush drives through Lusaka National Park invigorating. In late July or early August, Lusaka hosts the annual Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show at the Showgrounds off Great East Road.
Hot Dry Season and Jacaranda Bloom (September and October) is peak wildlife-viewing season across Zambia, as shrinking waterholes draw huge herds to the Lower Zambezi and South Luangwa rivers. In Lusaka itself, daytime highs climb to 29°C in September and 31°C to 33°C in October (locally nicknamed "suicide month" before the rains break), while avenues across Longacres, Rhodes Park and Independence Avenue explode with purple jacaranda and red flamboyant blossoms. On 24 October, Zambia celebrates Independence Day with civic ceremonies at the Freedom Statue.
Emerald Season / Summer Rains (November to April) begins with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms in mid-November and peaks between December and February. Daytime temperatures drop back to a warm 26°C to 28°C, the dusty bushveld turns deep green, migratory birds arrive in force, and fresh wild mushrooms and seasonal fruits fill Lusaka's markets. While seasonal bush camps in the river valleys close during peak rains, Lusaka, Lilayi and Chaminuka remain open year-round. Check what to wear in Lusaka before packing.
