Where to Stay in Lusaka: Best Areas Compared
Choosing between tranquil Kabulonga gardens, central Longacres and Rhodes Park, or Great East Road hotels.
Because Lusaka has no walkable historic old town and daytime traffic along Cairo Road can be dense, almost all visitors choose to stay in the tree-lined central and eastern suburbs stretching between Rhodes Park, Longacres, Kabulonga and the Great East Road corridor. Each neighbourhood balances airport convenience, evening dining and quiet gardens slightly differently.
Kabulonga and Woodlands (leafy, tranquil and upscale)
Sitting six to eight kilometres east of Cairo Road at the end of Independence Avenue and Twin Palm Road, Kabulonga is Lusaka's most sought-after residential neighbourhood. Wide avenues shaded by giant fig, mango and jacaranda trees hold embassies, contemporary art spaces such as 37d Gallery, boutique garden hotels, artisan bakeries and open-air restaurants around Centro Mall and Pinnacle Mall. Staying in Kabulonga (or neighbouring Woodlands to the south) keeps you in a calm, green oasis with quick southern back-road access via Leopard's Hill Road toward Lusaka National Park and Lilayi.
Longacres and Rhodes Park (central, diplomatic and well-connected)
Located midway between downtown Cairo Road and Kabulonga around Independence Avenue, Addis Ababa Drive and Haile Selassie Avenue, Longacres and Rhodes Park form the diplomatic and administrative heart of the capital. Here you are five minutes by taxi from the Lusaka National Museum, Kabwata Cultural Village and the restaurants and traditional kitchens around Longacres Mall and Thornpark, making this the smartest base if you have meetings in town or want short rides in every direction.
Great East Road Corridor: Manda Hill, Arcades, EastPark and Roma (dining and airport links)
Stretching north-east along the Great East Road opposite the University of Zambia campus, the cluster around Arcades, EastPark Mall and Manda Hill (together with the quiet residential pocket of Roma and Kalundu just north of the highway) offers modern four- and five-star business hotels, cinemas, late-night dining plazas and the weekly Sunday Pakati Market. Because you sit on the eastern side of town, your transfer to Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) for early morning domestic safari flights takes only 20 to 25 minutes without crossing central traffic.
Lilayi and Southern Bush Fringes (wildlife at your doorstep)
If you have a full day or two between flights and prefer waking up to impala and birdsong rather than city avenues, book a thatched chalet at Lilayi Lodge thirty minutes south of town right beside the GRI Elephant Nursery and ten minutes from Lusaka National Park. Fit your base into our three-day Lusaka itinerary.
