What to Wear in Lusaka

Neutral bush layers, respectful attire for city markets and soft-sided luggage rules for domestic flights.

Most travellers pass through Lusaka either on business or at the start and end of a Zambian bush safari, so your wardrobe needs to bridge leafy suburban cafés in Kabulonga, traditional markets along Cairo Road and dusty miombo tracks at Lilayi or the Lower Zambezi. Even if you are only staying in the capital, packing smartly for highland sun and cool winter evenings pays off.

Clothing for Lusaka's reserves and onward bush flights

  • Neutral earth tones (khaki, olive, sand and stone) and closed walking shoes: ideal for morning game drives in Lusaka National Park, visiting the Lilayi Elephant Nursery or walking at Chaminuka. Avoid bright white (which shows dust immediately and startles wildlife) and leave dark blue or black shirts behind if heading down to the Zambezi or Luangwa valleys, as those dark shades attract tsetse flies in lowveld woodland.
  • A warm fleece or lightweight down jacket (May to August): at 1,280 metres, early morning drives and evening garden dinners in June and July dip to 9°C to 11°C before warming rapidly by mid-morning.
  • A waterproof rain jacket and umbrella (November to March): summer downpours arrive quickly in the afternoon during the emerald season.
  • Soft-sided duffel bags if connecting to safari parks: light aircraft flying out of Lusaka to Mfuwe, Kafue or Lower Zambezi airstrips enforce strict luggage limits (typically 15 to 23 kg in soft-sided bags without rigid frames).

City etiquette, markets and chitenge wraps

Zambia is a warm, socially conservative Christian nation where neat, modest dress is respected. While shorts and sundresses are normal around lodge pools and upscale malls like EastPark, wear knee-length trousers, midi skirts or jeans with covered shoulders when browsing Kabwata Cultural Village, Kamwala Market or downtown Cairo Road. One useful local item to buy on arrival is a cotton chitenge wrap: women carry one to tie around the waist when visiting traditional villages, rural markets or community projects. Finally, never pack military-style camouflage clothing, which is prohibited for civilians in Zambia. Check seasonal weather before you pack.
