What to Wear in Maputo
Breathable natural fabrics for coastal humidity, boat gear for Inhaca Island and relaxed Lusophone style.
Packing for Maputo means dressing for a warm, breeze-washed Indian Ocean port that combines relaxed Lusophone café culture with sandy barrier islands and coastal bush reserves. Even in the middle of the southern winter (June to August), daytime temperatures sit in the mid-twenties, while summer afternoons call for the lightest breathable fabrics you own.
Daytime clothing for the Baixa, Polana and Inhaca Island
- Loose linen and lightweight cotton shirts, trousers and dresses: essential from October to April when coastal humidity climbs, and comfortable year-round for walking between the CFM Railway Station, Fortaleza and Mercado Central. Avoid heavy synthetic fabrics that trap heat.
- Comfortable walking sandals or breathable canvas trainers: the pavements of the Baixa and Polana have occasional broken tiles and tree roots, so bring supportive flat shoes rather than thin beach flip-flops for city walks.
- Reef-safe sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, a sunhat and water shoes: if you are taking a boat across Maputo Bay to Inhaca Island and the sandbars of Ilha dos Portugueses, glare off the turquoise water is intense and wet landings require sandals you can wade ashore in.
- A light cardigan, linen blazer or windbreaker (May to August): winter evenings on the cliff edge of Polana or during an early morning ferry crossing across the bay dip to 14°C to 16°C in the sea breeze.
City style, capulanas and mosquito protection
Maputo has a relaxed, stylish cosmopolitan air influenced by both southern Africa and Portugal. At oceanfront restaurants along the Marginal and upscale bistros in Polana Cimento, smart-casual summer attire (linen shirts, chinos, sundresses and leather sandals) is the norm, though swimwear should stay strictly on the beach at Costa do Sol or Inhaca rather than on city streets. When visiting FEIMA or Mercado Central, pick up a colourful Mozambican capulana cotton sarong, which doubles as a beach wrap, scarf or skirt. Finally, pack long, loose light-coloured trousers, long-sleeved linen shirts and tropical insect repellent for dusk terraces year-round. Check seasonal weather before you pack.
