Where to Stay in Maputo: Best Areas Compared
Why the breezy upper avenues of Polana Cimento and Sommerschield make the finest bases in Maputo.
In Maputo, elevation and sea breeze determine the character of every neighbourhood. Almost all leisure and business visitors choose to stay on the upper clifftop plateau of Polana Cimento and Sommerschield or along the oceanfront Avenida Marginal, visiting the historic port streets of the Baixa during the day.
Polana Cimento (best all-round base for first-time visitors)
Perched on the red-earth headland above the bay around Avenida Julius Nyerere, Avenida 24 de Julho and Avenida Friedrich Engels, Polana Cimento is Maputo's signature neighbourhood. Shaded by flame trees and lined with Pancho Guedes modernist apartments, bakeries, bookshops and sidewalk cafés, it lets you walk safely by day to the Natural History Museum, the cliff-edge viewpoints over the bay and the historic 1922 Polana Serena Hotel. From Polana, a short txopela ride drops you down to the CFM Railway Station in ten minutes or out to the fish market in fifteen.
Sommerschield and Coop (leafy, quiet and diplomatic)
Immediately north of Polana Cimento around Avenida Mao Tse Tung, Avenida Kenneth Kaunda and Avenida Mártires da Machava lies Sommerschield, the capital's tranquil diplomatic and residential quarter. Embassies, university villas and intimate boutique guesthouses with garden pools surround FEIMA craft market in Parque dos Continuadores and the artists' collective at Núcleo de Arte. If you prefer quiet tree-lined streets and garden bistros over main-avenue traffic, Sommerschield is ideal.
Avenida Marginal and Costa do Sol (oceanfront breeze and seafood)
Following the curve of Maputo Bay below the Polana cliffs and stretching north toward Costa do Sol, Avenida Marginal holds modern high-rise seafront hotels, beach clubs and sunset jogging paths. Staying along the Marginal puts the Indian Ocean right across the promenade and places you close to the boat jetties for Inhaca Island and the charcoal grills of Mercado do Peixe, though you will use taxis to climb the hill into Polana for cafes and museums.
The Baixa (historic architecture and daytime bustle)
Down around Praça dos Trabalhadores and Avenida 25 de Setembro, the Baixa offers budget-friendly business hotels within walking distance of the CFM Station, Fortaleza and Mercado Central. Because the port streets become very quiet and dimly lit once offices and market stalls close at dusk, solo travellers and first-timers generally find Polana or Sommerschield much more comfortable after dark. Fit your base into our three-day Maputo itinerary.
