Best Time to Visit Maputo

Sunny, breeze-cooled dry months from May to October, scarlet flame blossoms and humid tropical summers.

Washed by the warm Mozambique Channel current of the Indian Ocean just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, Maputo has a tropical savanna climate moderated by afternoon sea breezes. Unlike highland Harare or Lusaka, Maputo never gets cold at night. For low humidity, cloudless skies and comfortable walking temperatures through the Baixa, aim for the cooler dry season from May to October.

Cool Dry Season (May to September) is widely considered the finest time to visit Maputo and southern Mozambique. Rainfall drops to just a couple of light coastal showers a month, humidity stays refreshingly low, and daytime highs hover between 24°C and 26°C while evenings settle around a mild 14°C to 16°C. This is prime weather for walking between the CFM Railway Station, Casa de Ferro and Tunduru Gardens, sitting outdoors over grilled prawns at Mercado do Peixe, and driving the sandy tracks of Maputo National Park. From July to October, humpback whales migrate through the warm waters around Inhaca Island and Ponta do Ouro to calve and breach offshore.

Spring Blossom and Shoulder Season (October and November) warms up noticeably (27°C to 29°C) while sea temperatures climb for snorkelling off Inhaca and Portuguese Island. In late October and November, Maputo puts on a spectacular botanical show as thousands of flamboyant (royal poinciana / flame) trees and purple jacarandas burst into scarlet and violet flower along Avenida Julius Nyerere and Avenida Friedrich Engels, earning the city its old nickname, the City of Acacias.

Hot, Humid Rainy Season (December to March) brings tropical summer heat (30°C to 32°C) paired with high coastal humidity and heavy afternoon downpours, particularly in January and February. While beach cafés along the Marginal and festival nights around New Year are lively, midday walks in the Baixa feel sticky, and unsealed tracks in Maputo National Park can flood after heavy rain. April is a lovely green transition month as the storms clear. Check what to wear in Maputo before packing.
