3 Days in Maseru: Royal Citadels, Cave Villages and Maletsunyane Falls

Three days combining Kingsway crafts, Moshoeshoe's royal mesa, Kome Caves and Semonkong.

Three days in Maseru gives you an unhurried introduction to the capital's crafts and food on Day 1, a deep dive into nineteenth-century Basotho history and cave architecture on Day 2, and a high-altitude road trip into the Maloti gorges on Day 3. Check our practical briefing for border and cash tips before setting out.

Day 1: Kingsway, the Basotho Hat, Heritage Blankets & Lancer's Gap

  • Morning: start along Kingsway at the conical Basotho Hat craft centre to inspect hand-woven mokorotlo grass hats, clay pots and mohair tapestries, then visit a nearby heritage outfitter to learn the meanings behind authentic Seanamarena woollen blankets.
  • Lunchtime: sit down along Kingsway or Pioneer Road for a traditional lunch of steaming papa, wild moroho greens and slow-braised oxtail or pan-fried Maloti rainbow trout.
  • Afternoon: walk past the twin stone towers of Our Lady of Victories Cathedral, then drive up the winding sandstone cleft of Lancer's Gap and the Mpilo Hill Parliament ridge for golden-hour views across the Caledon River valley into the Free State.

Day 2: Thaba Bosiu Royal Citadel, Ha Baroana Rock Art & Kome Cave Dwellings

  • Early morning: drive 24 km east to Thaba Bosiu while the air is cool. Tour the Cultural Village museum below the cliffs, photograph the conical peak of Mount Qiloane, and climb Khubelu Pass with a local guide to see King Moshoeshoe I's ruined stone village and the royal burial cairns on the summit mesa.
  • Midday: continue northeast into Berea District to visit the Kome Cave Dwellings (Ha Kome), five mud-and-dung homes sealed beneath a massive sandstone overhang since the 1820s.
  • Afternoon: detour via Nazareth to see the riverside San Bushman ochre paintings at Ha Baroana before returning to Maseru for dinner.

Day 3: Highland Drive to Semonkong & Maletsunyane Falls (or Mohale Dam)

  • Early morning: take the paved A5 mountain road southeast through the sandstone amphitheatre of Roma and up over Bushman's Pass to Semonkong.
  • Mid-morning to afternoon: hike or ride a Basotho pony from Semonkong along the canyon rim to watch Maletsunyane Falls plunge 192 metres into its basalt gorge, eat lunch by the river in Semonkong, and drive back to Maseru before dusk (or substitute the A3 drive over Blue Mountain Pass to Mohale Dam).
