Metropolitan Natural Park, Soberanía National Park (Pipeline Road) & Gatun Lake Guide

Spot sloths, Geoffroy's tamarins, and toucans inside Panama City at Metropolitan Natural Park, birdwatch along Soberania's famous Pipeline Road, and boat across Gatun Lake to Monkey Island.

Because the Panama Canal requires billions of litres of fresh rainwater for every day of lock operations, a continuous corridor of tropical forest has been preserved along the eastern bank of the waterway. As a result, Panama City is the only capital in the world where you can walk beneath a primary rainforest canopy inside the city limits and reach one of the planet's richest birdwatching reserves in thirty-five minutes.

Metropolitan Natural Park (Parque Natural Metropolitano)

Just ten minutes by taxi or Uber north of Bella Vista along Avenida Juan Pablo II, Parque Natural Metropolitano protects 232 hectares of Pacific dry and moist tropical forest. Five well-maintained loop trails, Camino del Mono Tití, Los Momotides, Los Caobos, La Cienaguita, and Cerro Cedro, can be combined into a 3.5-kilometre (two-hour) morning walk climbing to the Mirador Cerro Cedro at 150 metres elevation, where wooden decks look over the emerald forest crown straight to the glass towers of downtown, Casco Antiguo, and the Miraflores Locks.

Arrive as the gates open around 07:00 for the highest wildlife activity: look in the upper Cecropia branches for brown-throated three-toed sloths, troops of diminutive rufous-naped Geoffroy's tamarins (mono tití), mantled howler monkeys, keel-billed toucans, blue-crowned motmots, and long-nosed agoutis (ñeques) foraging among the leaf litter. Check the official park portal for trail guidelines before visiting.

Soberanía National Park, Pipeline Road & Rainforest Discovery Center

Thirty-five minutes north of the city past the Pedro Miguel Locks, 22,104-hectare Soberanía National Park stretches along the Chagres River around the former Canal Zone town of Gamboa. Its premier trail is the 17-kilometre gravel Pipeline Road (Camino del Oleoducto), built during the Second World War to service a trans-isthmian fuel pipeline and renowned among ornithologists ever since an Audubon Society count recorded 525 bird species here in a single day, including trogons, puffbirds, antbirds, and harpy eagles. At the start of Pipeline Road sits the Panama Rainforest Discovery Center, where visitors climb a 32-metre (100-foot) spiral steel observation tower into the upper forest canopy and watch over a dozen species of hummingbirds at the visitor veranda.

Gatun Lake Boat Safaris and Monkey Island

At the public boat ramp in Gamboa where the Chagres River meets the Panama Canal, local boat captains lead two-to-three-hour morning expeditions out into the shipping lane of Gatun Lake, passing alongside towering container ships emerging from the Culebra Cut, before gliding into quiet jungle backwaters around Monkey Island to observe white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys, snail kites, and spectacled caimans.
