Best Time to Visit Paros: Calm June & September Seas, August Pirate Night and Winds

Why June and September deliver glass-calm water at Kolymbithres and Santa Maria at a fraction of August hotel prices.

Lying at the heart of the central Cyclades, Paros enjoys a dry, sun-drenched Aegean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year and refreshing northern summer breezes that keep afternoon temperatures around a comfortable 27°C to 29°C. For the best combination of warm, calm turquoise water, open beach restaurants and stress-free dining reservations in Naoussa, aim for late May to late June or September to mid-October.

Late Spring & Early Summer (May and June) is the most photogenic time to walk the island. In May and early June, the hills around Lefkes are green and fragrant with wild oregano and thyme, making the 50-minute walk down the marble 1000 AD Byzantine Road to Prodromos a joy without midday heat. By early June, the shallow granite coves of Kolymbithres and Monastiri have already warmed up for swimming, all wooden water-taxis are running, and you can walk into any waterfront restaurant in Naoussa without booking weeks ahead.

High Summer & The August 23 'Pirate Night' (July and August) brings the liveliest nightlife, 28°C to 30°C afternoons and the annual peak of the dry northern Meltemi wind (which makes Golden Beach and Pounda strait acclaimed for windsurfing and kitesurfing; on windy days, swim at sheltered Monastiri, Kolymbithres, Krios or south-facing Faragas and Aliki). Note two huge August festival dates: on 15 August, Parikia celebrates the Dormition of the Virgin at Panagia Ekatontapyliani with a flotilla of flares and fireworks; and on 23 August, Naoussa stages its legendary Koursariki Nichta (Pirate Night) re-enacting Barbarossa's 1537 raid with torchlit boats and traditional dancing until dawn.

Golden Autumn: Warm Seas & Wine Harvest (September and Early October) is the sweet spot for swimmers and food lovers: the wind drops, the sea is warmer in September and October (24°C) than in June, and grape-stomping and souma distilling begin across the vineyards. Check what to wear in Paros before packing.
