Paros
Cosmopolitan heart of the central Cyclades, where the half-sunken Venetian harbour castle and whitewashed fishing piers of Naoussa meet the 326 AD Byzantine church of Parikia, the sculpted granite coves of Kolymbithres, the Byzantine road of Lefkes and a 7-minute ferry to Antiparos.
Quick decisions
How many days?
3 to 4 days: Parikia's Frankish Castle, Panagia Ekatontapyliani and Naoussa's Venetian fishing harbour on day one, a boat across the bay to sculpted Kolymbithres Beach and Monastiri on day two, the mountain village of Lefkes, the 1000 AD Byzantine Road and Golden Beach on day three, plus a 7-minute ferry to Antiparos on day four. Follow our multi-day route.
Where should I stay?
Naoussa (North Coast): chic waterfront dining, whitewashed boutiques and boats to Kolymbithres and Santa Maria. Parikia (West Coast): walkable ferry port, historic alleys, sunset bars and main KTEL bus hub. Piso Livadi or Aliki: relaxed family beach villages. Compare bases in our island overview.
Do I need a car?
Not for Parikia, Naoussa and Antiparos; helpful for full-island beach loops. Punctual KTEL buses link Parikia, Naoussa, Lefkes, Piso Livadi and Pounda (for Antiparos), while wooden water-taxis cross Naoussa Bay to Kolymbithres and Monastiri.
Best for
Harbour dining & Cycladic style: Naoussa's wave-washed Venetian fortress and octopus-drying fishing piers. Sculpted beaches: smooth granite moonscapes at Kolymbithres and golden sands at Santa Maria and Chrissi Akti. Easy twin-island hopping: 7-minute ferries to Antiparos and 30-minute boats to Naxos.
Before you go
Book Naoussa harbour dinner tables ahead and walk the ancient marble quarries: Paros gave the ancient world translucent Parian Marble (used to carve the Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace). Read our practical briefing.
Getting around
Ferry Port at Parikia & Airport (PAS): all ferries dock right at the windmill roundabout in Parikia, where the central KTEL bus station sits 100 metres from the gangway. Details in arrival and transport.
Overview
Anchored at the crossroads of the Aegean Sea just six miles west of Naxos, Paros strikes what many seasoned Greek-island travellers consider the most harmonious balance in the Cyclades: it combines the cosmopolitan dining and boutique energy of Mykonos with the authentic whitewashed villages, Byzantine hiking trails and approachable prices of traditional island life. In antiquity, Mount Marathi at the centre of the island yielded the world's most prized stone, translucent, medium-grained white Parian Marble (Lychnites), quarried by lamplight to carve the Venus de Milo, the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Winged Victory of Samothrace.
Today, visitors split their time between two charismatic coastal towns: the ferry capital of Parikia, home to a 1260 Frankish Castle built entirely of ancient temple marble and the 326 AD Byzantine basilica of Panagia Ekatontapyliani, and the northern fishing harbour of Naoussa, where a 15th-century Venetian fortress stands half-submerged in the sea. Across Naoussa Bay lie the wind-sculpted granite boulders of Kolymbithres and Santa Maria, while inland rises the medieval mountain capital of Lefkes and to the west waits the 7-minute ferry to Antiparos. Start with our before-you-go briefing and top things to do in Paros.
Getting there
All Blue Star, SeaJets and Fast Ferries from Athens (Piraeus and Rafina), Mykonos (45 mins), Naxos (35 mins), Ios and Santorini (1.5 to 2 hours) dock directly at the central windmill pier of Parikia, 100 metres from the main KTEL Bus Station. Paros National Airport (PAS) lies 10 kilometres south-west of Parikia near Aliki with multiple daily 40-minute flights from Athens. For neighboring Antiparos, local passenger boats depart directly from Parikia port (30 mins) or car ferries shuttle every 15 to 30 minutes across the narrow channel from Pounda (7 mins). Where to stay
Choosing between Parikia and Naoussa defines your trip: stay in Naoussa on the northern bay if you want chic waterside cocktail bars, candlelit fish tavernas around the tiny Venetian harbour and water-taxi boats to Kolymbithres and Monastiri; stay in Parikia on the western bay if you want budget-friendly boutique hotels, sunset seafront promenades, instant ferry access and direct buses to every corner of the island without changing lines. For quiet seaside stays, look at Piso Livadi, Golden Beach or Aliki. Compare all areas in where to stay in Paros.
Things to do

Full list in things to do in Paros.
Food and drink
Paros is famous across the Aegean for sun-dried, charcoal-grilled chub mackerel (gouna), slow-baked Sunday chickpea stew in clay pots (revithada), garlic-almond dip (skordalia), local cheeses (xynomyzithra and spicy touloumotyri), fried snails with rosemary (karavoles in Lefkes), and crisp, mineral PDO Paros wines fermented from indigenous white Monemvasia and red Mandilaria grapes at Moraitis Winery in Naoussa.
