National Museum of Iceland, Perlan Ice Cave & the 871 CE Settlement Exhibition
Explore Reykjavik's three top museums: see the 1200 CE Valthjofsstadur Door at the National Museum of Iceland, walk around an excavated 871 CE Viking longhouse at The Settlement Exhibition, and enter the real-snow Ice Cave at Perlan.
Because early medieval Icelanders built with perishable turf, driftwood, and volcanic stone rather than monumental masonry, the island's Viking and Saga-Age heritage is preserved inside Reykjavík's museums. Three institutions in the capital bring a thousand years of human and natural history vividly to life.

1. The Settlement Exhibition (Landnámssýningin, Aðalstræti 16): An 871±2 CE Viking Longhouse
- Reykjavík's Oldest Human Structure (borgarsogusafn.is): During hotel excavations in 2001 at the corner of Aðalstræti and Túngata in central Miðborg, archaeologists uncovered the intact foundation of a tenth-century Viking chieftain's hall (skáli) alongside a boundary turf wall embedded with volcanic ash from the 871±2 CE Settlement Layer eruption. Operated by the Reykjavík City Museum, this underground gallery lets you walk around the preserved 20-metre-long central hearth where Norse settlers cooked, wove wool, and recited poetry, accompanied by interactive multimedia projections and excavated artefacts.
2. The National Museum of Iceland (Þjóðminjasafn Íslands, Suðurgata 41)
- From Norse Chieftains to Modern Independence (thjodminjasafn.is): Founded in 1863 beside the University of Iceland ten minutes south of Tjörnin lake, the National Museum's flagship exhibition "Making of a Nation" displays more than 2,000 national treasures, led by three ground-floor masterpieces:
- The Valþjófsstaður Church Door (c. 1200 CE): A richly carved pine portal from eastern Iceland depicting a mounted knight rescuing a lion from a winged dragon, who then faithfully follows him to his grave, one of the finest works of Romanesque woodcarving in northern Europe.
- The Eyrarland Bronze Figurine (c. 1000 CE): A miniature seated figure holding either Thor's hammer (Mjöllnir) or a Christian cross, capturing the moment Iceland converted from Norse paganism to Christianity at the Alþingi in 1000 CE.
- The 1584 Guðbrandsbiblía: The first complete Bible translated and printed in Icelandic at Hólar, preserving medieval Old Norse for modern readers.

3. Perlan ("The Pearl") on Öskjuhlíð Hill, Plus Árbær Open Air Museum & Whales of Iceland
- A 100-Metre Real-Snow Ice Cave & 360° Viewing Deck (perlan.is): Designed by architect Ingimundur Sveinsson and opened in 1991 atop six colossal geodesic tanks that store 24 million litres of geothermal hot water, Perlan houses the Wonders of Iceland nature museum. Pull on a provided thermal jacket to walk through the world's first indoor real-snow Ice Cave, built from over 350 tonnes of blue mountain snow kept at -10°C, watch the Áróra Northern Lights Planetarium film, inspect a 10-metre model of the Látrabjarg puffin cliff, and step onto the fourth-floor 360-degree outdoor observation deck for labelled views from Mount Esja to Snæfellsjökull.
- Árbær Open Air Museum & Whales of Iceland: If you have an extra afternoon, ride a city bus east to Árbær Open Air Museum to step inside twenty relocated 19th-century turf-roofed houses and a turf church, or visit Whales of Iceland in the Grandi Harbour District to walk beneath 23 life-size models of blue, humpback, and sperm whales.
