South Coast (Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss & Reynisfjara) & Snaefellsnes Day Trips
Compare the two greatest full-day excursions beyond the Golden Circle: follow Route 1 along the South Coast to Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Solheimajokull glacier, and Reynisfjara black-sand beach near Vik, or tour the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
Once you have explored Reykjavík and the Golden Circle, two full-day excursions (each around 10 to 11 hours round-trip by rental car or small-group minibus) showcase Iceland's glacier tongues, volcanic black-sand beaches, and coastal cliffs: the South Coast along Route 1 to Vík and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the west.

1. The South Coast along Route 1 to Vík (187 km Each Way): Waterfalls, Glaciers & Basalt Stacks
- Seljalandsfoss & Hidden Gljúfrabúi (1 hour 45 minutes East of Reykjavík): Fed by meltwater from the volcano-capped Eyjafjallajökull ice cap, Seljalandsfoss plunges 60 metres (197 feet) over an ancient recessed sea cliff. From May through October (when the path is free of falling winter icicles), you can put on your waterproof shell jacket and walk the rocky trail completely behind the roaring curtain of water, then continue 500 metres north along the cliff base to wade into the mossy slot canyon hiding Gljúfrabúi.
- Skógafoss (60m Drop) & Sólheimajökull Glacier Tongue: Twenty-five minutes further east stands Skógafoss, a sheer 25-metre-wide curtain of water whose heavy spray produces double rainbows on sunny days; climb the 527 metal steps on its eastern flank to look down over the brink. Continuing past Skógar, a short side road leads to Sólheimajökull, an ash-streaked outlet tongue of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier where certified guides lead 2.5-hour crampon glacier walks.
- Dyrhólaey Sea Arch & Reynisfjara Black-Sand Beach (plus Sneaker-Wave Rules): Just before the village of Vík í Mýrdal, stop at the 120-metre promontory arch of Dyrhólaey (a major puffin nesting site from May to mid-August) before descending to Reynisfjara. Here jet-black volcanic sand meets a cliff of polygonal basalt organ-pipe columns (Garðar), the vaulted Hálsanefshellir sea cave, and the 66-metre offshore Reynisdrangar sea stacks. Essential safety rule (safetravel.is): Reynisfjara's steep underwater drop-off generates sudden, powerful sneaker waves (öldugangur) that surge dozens of metres higher up the beach than preceding waves. Always check the colour-coded Red / Yellow / Green warning light board at the beach entrance, never turn your back on the ocean, and stay completely out of the surf when the yellow or red light is flashing.

2. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula ("Iceland in Miniature", 2 Hours North via Route 1 & 54)
- Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi Sea Cliffs, Búðakirkja & Snæfellsjökull National Park: Stretching ninety kilometres west into the North Atlantic between Faxaflói and Breiðafjörður bays and crowned at its tip by the 1,446-metre glacier-capped stratovolcano of Snæfellsjökull (immortalised by Jules Verne as the entrance to the centre of the Earth), Snæfellsnes packs almost every Icelandic landscape into one peninsula. Highlights include the golden beach and harbour seals of Ytri Tunga, the 19th-century pitch-black timber church of Búðakirkja set in a lava field, the kittiwake-lined basalt sea arches along the coastal path from Arnarstapi to Hellnar, the black-pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur, and the symmetrical arrowhead peak of Mount Kirkjufell (463m) and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall outside Grundarfjörður.
