3 Days in Savannah: 22 Historic Squares, Forsyth Park, River Street, Wormsloe & Tybee Island

A well-paced 3-day plan: walkable Historic Squares and River Street on Days 1 & 2, and Wormsloe, Bonaventure and Tybee Island on Day 3.

This three-day itinerary keeps Days 1 and 2 completely walkable inside the Historic District without a car (using the free DOT Shuttle and Savannah Belles Ferry), while Day 3 groups the marsh and island sights east of downtown into one scenic drive.

Day 1: Forsyth Park, Jones Street, Bull Street Squares & Cathedral

  • Morning: start with coffee at Collins Quarter inside 30-acre Forsyth Park and photograph the 1858 Cast-Iron Fountain. Walk two blocks north to Monterey Square to tour the 1868 Mercer Williams House and Gothic Mickve Israel Synagogue.
  • Midday: stroll brick-paved Jones Street, stopping on a weekday for family-style Southern lunch at Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room (or Zunzi's), then cross Whitefield, Troup and Lafayette Squares to enter the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
  • Afternoon to Evening: walk north up Bull Street through Madison, Chippewa, Wright and Johnson Squares, finishing with Tutti-Frutti at 1919 Leopold's Ice Cream and dinner at The Olde Pink House (or downstairs at Planters Tavern).

Day 2: Owens-Thomas House, First African Baptist, City Market & River Street

Day 3: Wormsloe, Bonaventure Cemetery, Fort Pulaski & Tybee Island

  • Morning: drive 15 minutes southeast to 1846 Bonaventure Cemetery, then continue down the 1.5-mile avenue of 400 live oaks at Wormsloe State Historic Site, Pin Point Heritage Museum and Bluff Drive.
  • Afternoon to Sunset: drive east on US-80 to Fort Pulaski National Monument, climb the 1736 Tybee Island Lighthouse, join a Lazaretto Creek Dolphin Tour, and swim at Tybee South Beach before Lowcountry Boil at The Crab Shack.
