Best Time to Visit Savannah: Spring Azalea Bloom (March to May), St. Patrick's Day, Autumn & Winter

Timing your trip for Late March and April's pink azalea explosion, October's crisp veranda weather or quiet January.

Blessed with a humid subtropical coastal climate, Savannah stays green all twelve months of the year because both the Southern Live Oak and the Southern Magnolia are evergreen trees that never look bare in winter, and Spanish moss hangs year-round. For comfortable 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) walking weather without July's humidity, aim for Spring (March to May) or Autumn (October to November).

1. Peak Spring: The Azalea Explosion & St. Patrick's Day (March, April & May)

  • Mid-March to Late April (The Most Photogenic Window of the Year): during the final two weeks of March and first three weeks of April, thousands of giant Formosa azalea bushes inside Forsyth Park, the 22 squares and Bonaventure Cemetery burst into hot-pink, coral and white blooms while purple wisteria drapes the wrought-iron fences. Daytime highs sit at 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F), and spring hosts the Savannah Tour of Homes and Gardens and the Savannah Music Festival.
  • March 17, Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Celebration (Book Months Ahead): started in 1824 by the Hibernian Society, Savannah stages the second-largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the United States, welcoming over 400,000 green-clad visitors, dyeing the Forsyth Park Fountain bright green and turning River Street into a three-day festival. Book early for the parade, or visit the week after March 17 for quiet squares.

2. Golden Autumn (October & November) vs Summer Beach Season (June to August)

  • October & November (Locals' Favourite Season): summer humidity fades, leaving crisp 13°C mornings and sunny 21°C to 26°C (70°F to 78°F) afternoons with the lowest rainfall of the year, ideal for evening ghost tours and the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.
  • June, July & August (Hot & Humid, 32°C to 34°C / 90°F to 94°F): tour air-conditioned house museums at midday, walk the shaded squares in the early morning, and swim in the 28°C ocean at Tybee Island.

3. Mild Winter Quiet Season (December, January & February)

Outside the festive holidays, January and February bring calmer hotel rates, shorter queues at Mrs. Wilkes' and Leopold's, and mild 16°C to 19°C (61°F to 66°F) afternoons with pink camellias in bloom. Check what to wear in Savannah.
