Getting to Savannah: SAV Airport (Express Bus or 20-Min Ride), Amtrak & Driving I-95
Reaching Savannah's Historic District in 20 minutes from SAV Airport, or taking the 2-hour coastal drive or Amtrak train from Charleston.
Located just 16 kilometres (10 miles) inland from the Atlantic Ocean along the Georgia and South Carolina border where Interstate 95 meets Interstate 16, Savannah is one of the easiest historic cities on the East Coast to reach by air, train or car, and pairs naturally with Charleston, South Carolina (170 km, 2 hours north) and Hilton Head Island (45 minutes northeast).
1. Arriving by Air at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV)
Served by nonstop flights from over 30 major cities (on Delta, American, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Breeze and Allegiant), SAV Airport is one of the friendliest, most relaxed regional airports in the country, with a central concourse modelled on a historic Savannah town square:
- By Ride-Hail or Regulated Taxi (18 to 22 Minutes to Any Historic District Hotel): airport taxis charge a government-regulated flat rate from SAV Airport to the entire Historic District (check the official airport ground transport page for current flat fares), while Uber and Lyft pick up outside baggage claim and reach downtown in around 20 minutes.
- By Public Bus (CAT Route 100X Airport Express): travelling light without a car? Walk out the terminal doors to the Ground Transportation kerb and board Chatham Area Transit's Route 100X Airport Express Bus (check the official CAT website for the modest single and return fare): it runs straight down I-95 and I-16 into downtown Savannah's Joe Murray Rivers Jr. Intermodal Transit Center (610 W Oglethorpe Ave) in 25 minutes, where you connect directly onto the complimentary DOT Express Shuttle.
2. By Amtrak Train from Charleston (1h 45m), New York, D.C. or Florida
To combine Charleston and Savannah without hiring a car, board Amtrak's daily Palmetto or Silver Meteor train: the journey between Charleston and Savannah takes 1 hour 45 minutes across the Lowcountry marshes (check Amtrak's website for current schedules and fares). The Savannah Amtrak Station (2611 Seaboard Coastline Dr) sits a 10-minute taxi or ride-hail trip west of the Historic District.
3. Driving via I-95 or Across the Talmadge Bridge (US-17 from Charleston)
Driving south from Charleston or Hilton Head? Take US-17 South across the 56-metre-high Talmadge Memorial Cable-Stayed Bridge, which drops you straight onto West Bay Street and the Historic District municipal parking garages.
