Stargazing in an International Dark Sky City & Sunrise Hot-Air Balloon Flights
Gazing at the Milky Way in one of the world's few certified Dark Sky Cities, and floating silently over 300-metre red spires at dawn.
In 2014, Sedona became the eighth municipality on Earth certified by DarkSky International as an 'International Dark Sky Community': by city law, every streetlight, hotel sign and shopping-centre lamp is downward-shielded and warm-filtered, with no billboards or highway floodlights. Drive just five minutes from your hotel after full darkness falls to see the Milky Way arch over the silhouette of the red rocks.
1. The 4 Best Drive-Up Stargazing Spots in Sedona (Free at Night, No Pass Needed)
Note a helpful local rule: you need no Red Rock Pass to park at US Forest Service trailheads after sunset when staying by your car to stargaze (bring a red-light torch to preserve night vision). Head to one of these four pull-outs on a moonless night:
- Courthouse Vista & Bell Rock North Car Parks (On Highway 179): paved roadside car parks framing the Milky Way over the silhouettes of Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte.
- Thunder Mountain & Aerie Trailheads (In West Sedona): tucked behind Thunder Mountain, shielded from town lights.
- Fay Canyon Trailhead (On Boynton Pass Road): sits in a dark corridor between canyon walls.
- Guided Telescope Tours with Night-Vision Goggles: local astronomers (Sedona Stargazing and Evening Sky Tours) set up computerised Dobsonian telescopes and military-grade Night Vision Monoculars to view Saturn's rings, nebulae and star clusters.
2. Sunrise Hot-Air Balloon Flights Over the Red Rocks (Departing at Dawn)
Because desert thermals build by mid-morning, hot-air balloons in Sedona fly exclusively at sunrise. Two FAA-certified operators, Red Rock Balloon Adventures and Northern Light Balloon Expeditions, hold US Forest Service permits to launch west of town:
- What the One-Hour Flight Is Like: you meet before dawn as the nylon envelopes inflate with glowing burners, then lift off gently as the first rays of morning sun turn Thunder Mountain, Doe Mountain, Bear Mountain and Boynton Canyon crimson beneath your basket, followed upon landing by a champagne toast and pastries.
