Sochi: Black Sea Riviera, Subtropical Parks and Caucasus Mountains
How Greater Sochi is organised along its 145-kilometre Black Sea coastline and how to combine its subtropical parks, Soviet sanatoriums, and Caucasus peaks.
Understanding Sochi begins with its extraordinary linear geography. Incorporating a 145-kilometre coastal strip along the Black Sea between the mouths of the Shepsi and Magri rivers in the northwest and the Psou River in the southeast, Greater Sochi covers more than 3,502 square kilometres while its built-up urban area occupies 176.77 square kilometres along the narrow coastal shelf and lower river valleys. With a municipal population of 466,078 residents and up to 600,000 across the wider urban agglomeration, it is the largest resort city in Russia and territorially the longest city in Europe. Rather than forming a single compact core, the city unfolds as a sequence of coastal microdistricts and mountain settlements linked by the North Caucasus Railway and the A147 coastal highway.

How Greater Sochi Is Divided
Travellers spend almost all of their time across three main zones, each with its own microclimate, architectural character, and rail hub:
- Tsentralny and Khostinsky Districts (Historic Resort Core): Spreading around the mouth of the Sochi River and extending southeast across the Vereshchaginka, Matsesta, and Khosta valleys, this is the cultural heart of the resort. Tree-lined Primorskaya Promenade and the 1955 Marine Terminal anchor the harbour, while Kurortny Prospekt links the 1937 Winter Theatre, the 1936 Sochi Art Museum, the 1889 Sochi Arboretum, the 1937 Stalin Dacha at Zelyonaya Roshcha, and the 663-metre limestone massif of Mount Akhun.
- Adler and the Sirius Federal Territory (Coastal Plain): Roughly 25 to 35 kilometres southeast of central Sochi, the hills recede into the flat alluvial plain between the Mzymta and Psou rivers. Created as a separate settlement in 2020 and designated as Russia's first federal territory in December 2020, Sirius and the Sochi Olympic Park house the 2014 Winter Olympic ice arenas, Fisht Olympic Stadium, and a wide seafront esplanade.
- Krasnaya Polyana and Esto-Sadok (Mountain Cluster): Forty kilometres inland up the Mzymta Gorge from Adler, the urban-type settlement of Krasnaya Polyana sits at about 550 metres above sea level beneath the Aibga Ridge and Mount Achishkho. Adjacent Esto-Sadok and Rosa Khutor provide multi-stage gondolas up to Roza Peak at 2,320 metres.

Subtropical Coast Meets Protected Wilderness
Because the Main Caucasian Range blocks cold northerly winds while the Black Sea retains summer heat well into autumn, central Sochi enjoys an average annual daytime temperature of 18.9 °C and long hours of sunshine. Hardiness zone 8b to 9a conditions allow Chinese windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei), Canary Island date palms (Phoenix canariensis), and Sabal palmettos to thrive along pedestrian boulevards such as Navaginskaya Street, which runs directly from Alexey Dushkin's 1952 railway station to the harbour.

Immediately inland from the built-up shoreline, much of Greater Sochi is protected within two neighbouring conservation areas: Sochi National Park (established on 5 May 1983 across 1,937 square kilometres) and the Caucasus Nature Reserve (founded in 1924), whose mountain wilderness forms the core of the Western Caucasus UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1999.
