3 Days in Stockholm: Islands, Vasa Museum, Södermalm and Archipelago

Three island-by-island days linking Gamla Stan, City Hall, the Vasa Museum, Södermalm and the archipelago.

This three-day route groups neighbouring islands so you cross the water smoothly on foot and by SL ferry without wasting time underground. Before Day 1, check the guided tour schedule at Stockholm City Hall and book morning entry for the Vasa Museum.

Day 1: City Hall, Gamla Stan, the Royal Palace & Södermalm Sunset Cliffs

  • Morning: begin on the waterfront of Kungsholmen with a 45-minute guided tour of Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) to see the Blue Hall and 18-million-tile Golden Hall (and climb the 106m tower between May and September).
  • Midday: walk across Vasabron onto Riddarholmen for water views and Riddarholmskyrkan, then enter Gamla Stan to see Stortorget, the Nobel Prize Museum, Storkyrkan and the around midday changing of the guard at the Royal Palace.
  • Midday: pause for lunch and a mid-afternoon fika (cardamom bun and filter coffee) along quiet Prästgatan or Svartmangatan, squeezing down narrow Mårten Trotzigs Gränd on your way south to Slussen.
  • Afternoon: walk up to the wooden-railed cliff path of Monteliusvägen on Södermalm for the classic panorama back over Lake Mälaren, then spend the evening browsing SoFo around Nytorget or viewing a late-night photography exhibition at Fotografiska.

Day 2: Djurgården (Vasa Museum & Skansen), Östermalms Saluhall & Skeppsholmen

  • Morning: ride Ferry 82 from Slussen or Tram 7 from Sergels Torg out to Djurgården so you are at the doors of the Vasa Museum at opening time to admire the 1628 warship before crowds peak.
  • Midday: spend two hours walking the historic farmsteads and Nordic wildlife trails of Skansen Open-Air Museum (or visit ABBA The Museum), followed by a biodynamic orchard lunch under the apple trees at Rosendals Trädgård (or inside the 1888 brick halls of Östermalms Saluhall).
  • Afternoon: stroll back along Strandvägen boulevard and cross the gilded-crown bridge of Skeppsholmsbron to peaceful Skeppsholmen for Moderna Museet or the Nationalmuseum.

Day 3: Metro Art Tour & Archipelago Ferry to Vaxholm (or Drottningholm Palace)

  • Morning: spend an hour riding the escalators of the Stockholm Metro Art Gallery (T-Centralen Blue Line, Kungsträdgården, Rådhuset, Solna Centrum and Stadion).
  • Morning: walk to Strömkajen (in front of the Grand Hôtel) and board a Waxholmsbolaget ferry for a one-hour cruise through the Stockholm Archipelago to Vaxholm (or take a steamship on Lake Mälaren from Stadshusbron to Drottningholm Palace), returning to town for a final dinner of Swedish meatballs with lingonberries.
