Stockholm Public Transport: SL Contactless Tap, Tram 7 and Ferries 80/82

Using contactless tap-and-go across Stockholm's Tunnelbana, Tram 7 and inner-harbour ferries 80 and 82.

Greater Stockholm's unified public transport network, SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik), covers the underground Tunnelbana (Metro), commuter trains (Pendeltåg), blue inner-city trunk buses (lines 1 to 4), trams and commuter boats (Pendelbåtar). Unlike cities divided into confusing concentric fare rings, the entire SL network across Stockholm County operates as a single flat-fare zone (with only Arlanda Airport station requiring an extra passage fee).

How to pay: Contactless Tap-and-Go versus the SL App

  • For 1 or 2 rides a day (Contactless Bank Card): you do not need to buy a physical card or download an app. Simply tap your contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay on the green reader at the Tunnelbana turnstile or when boarding a bus, tram or ferry. One tap automatically activates a 75-minute unlimited transfer ticket across all SL modes. Unlike Amsterdam or London, you only tap in when boarding; you never tap out when leaving. Remember that one bank card can only pay for one person at a time.
  • For 3 or more rides a day (24-hour, 72-hour or 7-day SL Pass): download the official SL-Reseplanering och biljetter app (or buy a green reusable SL smartcard at a station booth or Pressbyrån convenience shop) and load a 24-hour or 72-hour unlimited pass, which breaks even after just four single journeys.

Three scenic SL lines included on your regular ticket

  1. Ferry Line 82 (Djurgårdsfärjan): runs year-round every 10 to 15 minutes across the harbour between Slussen (at the foot of Gamla Stan and Södermalm), Skeppsholmen (in summer/weekends) and Allmänna gränd on Djurgården (for Skansen, Gröna Lund and the Vasa Museum). It takes nine minutes and gives you a classic harbour cruise for the price of a bus ticket.
  2. Ferry Line 80 (Sjövägen from Nybroplan): departs from Nybroplan in Östermalm, sailing along Strandvägen past Djurgården, Finnboda, Nacka Strand and Fjäderholmarna out to Ropsten and Lidingö.
  3. Tram Line 7 (Spårväg City): departs from T-Centralen (Sergels Torg) and glides down Hamngatan past Kungsträdgården and along the waterfront of Strandvägen straight across the bridge to the Vasa Museum and Skansen. On summer weekends, volunteer-run vintage trams from the early 1900s (Line 7N) also run this route.
