Stockholm Archipelago Guide: Vaxholm, Fjäderholmarna and Sandhamn
Picking the right archipelago island for a half-day or full-day ferry trip from central Stockholm.
Beginning right outside the quays of central Stockholm and fanning eighty kilometres east into the Baltic Sea lies the Stockholm Archipelago (Stockholms skärgård), a labyrinth of roughly 30,000 islands, rocky skerries and pine-covered inlets. You do not need a private yacht or an overnight booking to experience it: public ferries operated by Waxholmsbolaget and white classic vessels run by Cinderellabåtarna / Strömma depart directly from Strömkajen (in front of the Grand Hôtel) and Nybroplan or Slussen.
Which island to choose based on your time
- Fjäderholmarna (The Feather Islands, 25 to 30 minutes from Nybroplan/Slussen): the closest archipelago cluster to downtown, ideal if you only have half a day between May and September. Car-free walking paths loop around smooth granite bathing rocks, a fish smokehouse (Rökeriet), craft glassblowers, a small brewery and waterside seafood terraces.
- Vaxholm (50 to 60 minutes by boat from Strömkajen, or Bus 670 from Tekniska högskolan): the historic "Capital of the Archipelago" and the best year-round choice. Pastel-painted 19th-century wooden villas with intricate gingerbread fretwork verandas (in the漁 fishermen's quarter of Norrhamnen) face the 16th-century island fortress of Vaxholms Kastell across a narrow sound. Enjoy a lakeside garden fika at Hembygdsgårds Café and browse boutiques before sailing back.
- Grinda (1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours in the Mid-Archipelago): a protected nature reserve island managed by the Archipelago Foundation, with forest walking trails, sheep pastures, sandy coves, cliff-jumping rocks and the historic 1906 Art Nouveau yellow timber villa of Grinda Wärdshus.
- Sandhamn (2 hours 15 minutes from Strandvägen): sitting on the outer rim where the archipelago meets the open Baltic horizon, Sandhamn is a historic 17th-century maritime pilot and yachting village of red timber cottages pressed together along sandy paths, backed by pine woods and white sand beaches at Trouville.
Practical ferry tips and using your SL ticket
On public Waxholmsbolaget boats, you simply board first and tap your contactless bank card when the deckhand comes around with a handheld terminal (and during the off-peak season from mid-September to late April, holders of a valid 30-day or multi-day SL pass can travel on Waxholmsbolaget ferries using their regular SL pass; check current seasonal rules on arrival). Always bring a windproof layer in your daypack, as the open upper sun deck is breezy even in July.
