3 Days in Sydney: Harbour Icons, Bondi to Coogee Walk, Manly Ferry and Blue Mountains

A balanced three-day Sydney route linking the Opera House, The Rocks, and Harbour Bridge with the Bondi to Coogee cliff walk, Manly, and the Blue Mountains.

Three full days in Sydney give you enough time to experience the harbour from both the water and the bridge deck, walk the sandstone ocean cliffs from Bondi to Coogee, ride the commuter ferry across the Sydney Heads to Manly, and either explore Taronga Zoo or take a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Review our getting around Sydney guide before starting so you can tap on and off seamlessly with a contactless bank card.

Day 1: Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney Opera House, The Rocks and Harbour Bridge

  • Morning (Botanic Garden and Opera House): Start at the Macquarie Street gates of the Royal Botanic Garden and walk out to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for morning light on the harbour. Follow the Farm Cove seawall to Bennelong Point to tour the Sydney Opera House inside and out.
  • Midday (Circular Quay and The Rocks): Walk around Sydney Cove to The Rocks to see Cadmans Cottage (built in 1816), the hand-quarried sandstone walls of the Argyle Cut, the free Rocks Discovery Museum, and the historic pubs and cobbled lanes around Playfair Street.
  • Afternoon and Dusk (Sydney Harbour Bridge): Climb the Cumberland Street stairs onto the eastern footpath of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, pause at the South-East Pylon Lookout, and walk across the span to Milsons Point and Kirribilli before riding the F4 ferry back under the bridge arch to Circular Quay for dinner.

Day 2: Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, Sydney Seafood and Manly Ferry

  • Morning (Bondi to Coogee): Take the T4 train to Bondi Junction and the 333 bus down to Bondi Beach. Start at the Bondi Icebergs pool and follow the 6-kilometre Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk south past Tamarama, Bronte Baths, Clovelly, and Gordon's Bay to Coogee Beach, stopping for a swim and a flat white coffee along the way.
  • Afternoon (Manly Ferry and Shelly Beach): Ride the bus and L2 Light Rail from Coogee/Randwick back to Circular Quay, pause for freshly shucked Sydney rock oysters, and board the F1 public ferry from Wharf 3 for the thirty-minute crossing to Manly. Walk along The Corso to Manly Beach and follow the Cabbage Tree Bay boardwalk to Shelly Beach before returning to the city on the sunset ferry.

Day 3: Blue Mountains National Park or Taronga Zoo and Harbour Headlands

On your third day, choose between the mountains and the harbour bushland depending on the weather. On a clear day, board an early NSW TrainLink Blue Mountains Line train from Central Station to Katoomba for a Blue Mountains day trip to Echo Point, the Three Sisters, the Giant Stairway, and Wentworth Falls. If you prefer to stay by the coast, take the F2 ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo in the morning and walk the foreshore bush track around Bradleys Head to Chowder Bay in the afternoon.

How to adapt this route for wet weather or a fourth day

If a coastal rain system moves across Sydney on your second or third day, swap the exposed clifftop walk for the city's indoor architectural and cultural spine: ride the George Street light rail to the nineteenth-century domes of the Queen Victoria Building and the Strand Arcade, spend the afternoon inside the Art Gallery of New South Wales (including the underground World War II naval oil tank gallery at Naala Badu) and the Australian Museum opposite Hyde Park, and save the Bondi to Coogee trail for the next sunny morning.
