2 to 3 Days in Victoria: Inner Harbour, Butchart Gardens, Whale Watching, Old Town & Sooke
A logical 2-to-3-day route pairing the walkable Inner Harbour and Chinatown with The Butchart Gardens, an Orca safari and Malahat Skywalk.
This itinerary is designed so that Days 1 and 2 require zero car rental (walking around the Inner Harbour, James Bay and Chinatown on Day 1, and using Bus #75 + a harbour whale boat on Day 2), while Day 3 explores Victoria's castles, Beacon Hill Park and the dramatic forests of the Malahat Skywalk or Sooke! Read our bus DayPASS and water-taxi guide before Day 1.

Day 1: Inner Harbour, Parliament Buildings, Royal BC Museum, Fisherman's Wharf & Chinatown
- 09:30: start on the Inner Harbour Causeway; join the free 45-minute guided tour inside the 1897 BC Parliament Buildings, then cross Belleville Street to explore the Royal BC Museum, the free outdoor totem poles of Thunderbird Park (Mungo Martin's Big House) and 1852 Helmcken House.
- 12:30 to 15:00: hop aboard a tiny green Victoria Harbour Ferry ('Pickle Boat') across the harbour to Fisherman's Wharf: walk the wooden piers among the 33 rainbow-painted float homes, spot wild harbour seals, and eat fresh BC halibut fish-and-chips at Barb's! (Or book 14:00 Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Empress or Pendray Inn!).
- 15:30 to Evening: stroll north up Government Street (stopping inside 1909 Munro's Books!) into Old Town, Market Square and 1858 Chinatown; squeeze through 89cm-wide Fan Tan Alley, dinner-hop in a brick courtyard, and walk back to the harbour after dark to see the Parliament Buildings glowing with 3,300+ lights!

Day 2: The Butchart Gardens (Morning) & Salish Sea Orca/Humpback Whale Watching (Afternoon)
- 08:30 to 12:30: ride double-decker BC Transit Bus #75 (with a DayPASS) or drive 30 minutes north to The Butchart Gardens right when the gates open at 09:00 AM to beat tour buses into the Sunken Garden! Spend three hours wandering the Rose Garden, Ross Fountain, Japanese Garden (down to Tod Inlet!) and Italian Garden gelato stand. (Visiting on a July/August Saturday? Swap the order: do Whale Watching at 09:30 AM and go to Butchart Gardens at 16:30 PM to stay for the Saturday Night Fireworks!).
- 13:30 to 17:30: return to the Inner Harbour (grabbing a salmon tacone at Red Fish Blue Fish on the pier!) and board your 3.5-hour Salish Sea Whale-Watching Cruise (covered catamaran or Zodiac) to spot Bigg's Orcas, Humpback Whales, sea otters and sea lions at Race Rocks Lighthouse!
Day 3: Craigdarroch Castle, Beacon Hill Park (Mile 0) & Malahat Skywalk (OR Sooke Coast)
- 09:00 to 12:30: climb the 87 oak steps of 1890 Craigdarroch Castle in Rockland, then stroll through 200-acre Beacon Hill Park (127-foot Totem Pole and peacocks) to Mile 0 of the Trans-Canada Highway, the Dallas Road cliffs and the 800-metre Ogden Point Breakwater.
- 13:30 to 18:00: take the free afternoon shuttle (or drive 30 mins north via Goldstream Provincial Park and oceanfront Hatley Castle!) to walk the 10-storey timber spiral tower and slide at the Malahat Skywalk—or drive 45 minutes west to hike the wild Pacific coast at East Sooke Park, Sooke Potholes and Mystic Beach!
