Best Time to Visit Victoria: February Cherry Blossoms, Peak Whale Season (May–Oct) & Summer

Timing your trip for Canada's earliest February cherry blossoms, the May-to-October whale-watching peak or rainless summers.

Thanks to the Olympic Mountain Rain Shadow, Victoria's weather surprises visitors from the rest of Canada and Europe: its summers are dry and Mediterranean-like (receiving less rain in July and August than Rome or Barcelona!), while its winters are so mild that locals conduct an annual 'Flower Count' in late February when billions of blossoms are already in bloom while Toronto and Montreal are buried in snow!

1. Early Spring: Cherry Blossoms & 300,000 Tulips at Butchart Gardens (Late Feb to May)

If you want to escape winter early, Victoria's spring starts in late February! Throughout March and April, tunnels of pink Prunus blireiana plum blossoms and Japanese Somei-Yoshino / Kwanzan cherry blossoms line View Street, Moss Street, Fairfield and Beacon Hill Park, while in April and May over 300,000 tulips, daffodils and hyacinths explode into colour across The Butchart Gardens!

July, August and September are the driest, sunniest months of the year in Victoria, with comfortable 21°C to 24°C ocean-cooled afternoons.

2. Peak Whale Watching, Roses & Festival Season (June, July, August & September)

  • Why June to September Is Ideal: daytime temperatures sit at a perfect 20°C to 24°C (68°F–75°F) with almost zero humidity and 15+ hours of daylight! All 1,500 hanging flower baskets are up in the Inner Harbour, the Rose Garden at Butchart Gardens is in full fragrant bloom (with Saturday night fireworks every week in July and August!), and both Bigg's Orcas and Humpback Whales feed in peak numbers offshore (culminating in September and October's 'Humpback Comeback' when dozens of humpbacks gather in the Juan de Fuca Strait!).

3. Autumn Foliage & Christmas Magic at Butchart Gardens (October to January)

In October, the Japanese maples at Butchart Gardens turn fiery crimson and thousands of spawning salmon fill the river at Goldstream Provincial Park (late Oct to Nov). From 1 December to 6 January, The Butchart Gardens stages its magical Magic of Christmas—with hundreds of thousands of lights, outdoor ice-skating and hidden 'Twelve Days of Christmas' displays! Check what to wear in Victoria.
