Morne Seychellois Granite Hikes and Seychellois Creole Food
Climbing the Copolia granite dome above Victoria, visiting Mission Lodge and tasting Creole curries.
Immediately behind Victoria's low rooftops, the road climbs into Morne Seychellois National Park, a protected wilderness covering more than twenty per cent of Mahé. Within fifteen minutes by car or bus up winding Sans Soucis Road, coastal streets give way to cinnamon-scented cloud forests, carnivorous pitcher plants and dramatic granite viewpoints.
Copolia Trail, Morne Blanc and Mission Lodge
Three classic mountain stops lie along the Sans Soucis mountain pass linking Victoria to the west coast:
- Copolia Trail (497 metres, 1.5 to 2 hours return): the most rewarding half-day hike above Victoria. Starting from the forestry kiosk six kilometres up Sans Soucis Road (official park entry passes are purchased digitally via card or QR code at the trailhead), the path climbs through mahogany, cinnamon and endemic palms before emerging onto a vast, bare granite dome (glacis). Along the rock rim grow endemic Seychelles pitcher plants (Nepenthes pervillei), and the open summit looks straight down over Victoria Harbour, Eden Island and the reef-ringed islands of Sainte Anne Marine Park.
- Morne Blanc Trail and the Tea Factory: just past the crest of the pass on the western slope, a steeper 45-minute climb through misty moss forest leads to a wooden viewing platform perched high above the Indian Ocean, right near the 1962 Seychelles Tea Factory where locally grown vanilla and citronella teas are blended.
- Mission Lodge (Venn's Town): a tranquil grassy belvedere and stone ruins where liberated African children were educated in the 1870s, shaded by giant sangdragon trees with a pavilion where Queen Elizabeth II once took tea.
What to eat in Victoria: Creole curries, grilled fish and takeaways
After your descent into central Victoria, reward your appetite with Seychellois Creole cuisine at historic plantation restaurants (such as Marie Antoinette, housed in a conserved timber mansion near St Louis hill) or beloved lunchtime takeaway counters:
- Kari Zourit (octopus coconut curry) and Kari Koko: tender reef octopus or chicken simmered in fresh coconut milk, crushed garlic, ginger, curry leaves and local massalé spice blend.
- Grilled Bourzwa (red snapper) or Jobfish: whole reef fish scored and roasted over coconut-husk embers, served with green papaya satini (chutney), lentils and steamed rice.
- Shark Chutney (Satini Reken) and Ladob: flaked fish mashed with tart local bilimbi fruit, turmeric and lime, followed by ripe plantains and breadfruit poached in sweet coconut milk with nutmeg and vanilla pods (ladob).
