Wild West Coast Day Trip: East Sooke Regional Park, Sooke Potholes & Mystic Beach

Experiencing wild Vancouver Island rainforest, glacial canyon swimming holes and ocean waterfalls just 45 minutes west of Victoria.

Dont have time for the 4.5-hour drive up-island to Tofino, but want to experience wild, untamed Vancouver Island coastal rainforest, crashing Pacific swells, suspension bridges and tide pools? Drive just 35 to 70 minutes west of downtown Victoria along Highway 14 (the West Coast Road) through Sooke and Port Renfrew!

Just 40 minutes west of downtown Victoria at Aylard Farm, East Sooke Regional Park offers 50 kilometres of wild coastal trails and 1,500-year-old Indigenous petroglyphs.

1. East Sooke Regional Park (Aylard Farm to Becher Bay — 40 Mins West of Victoria, Free!)

Consistently rated by hikers as one of the finest coastal parks in Canada, East Sooke Regional Park protects 1,422 hectares of wave-battered headlands where you don't have to commit to a 6-hour hike to see the best part:

  • The Easy 1-Hour Loop from Aylard Farm Parking Lot: park at the eastern entrance at Aylard Farm. Walk 5 minutes across an open apple-orchard meadow to a sandy cove beach, then follow the rocky Coast Trail 20 minutes out to Creyke Point and Alldridge Point—where you can see prehistoric Coast Salish rock carvings (petroglyphs) etched into the seaside rock shelf while watching harbour seals, sea lions and passing whales in the kelp beds!

Carved at the end of the last Ice Age by giant boulders swirling in the glacial river, the Sooke Potholes are Victoria's favourite summer swimming holes.

2. Sooke Potholes Provincial Park & Whiffin Spit (45 Mins West)

  • Sooke Potholes Provincial Park (Free Entry!): five kilometres up Sooke River Road, giant glacial boulders carried by the melting ice sheet 15,000 years ago ground deep, smooth, circular cylinders and canyons directly into the bedrock of the Sooke River—creating a chain of crystal-clear, emerald-green freshwater swimming pools and waterfalls!
  • Whiffin Spit (In Sooke Harbour): a completely flat, stroller-friendly 2.5-kilometre natural gravel sandspit jutting across the mouth of Sooke Harbour with 360-degree views of the Olympic Mountains.

3. Mystic Beach, French Beach & Botanical Beach (Juan de Fuca Marine Trail — 60–90 Mins West)

Continuing 25 minutes west of Sooke along scenic Highway 14 brings you first to French Beach (where gray and humpback whales often swim within 100 metres of the pebble shore!), and then to the trailhead for Mystic Beach (4 km round-trip, 45 mins each way through giant rainforest trees and across a 30-metre suspension bridge!)—rewarding you with a sandstone cave and a ribbon waterfall that plunges straight off the cliff onto the ocean sand! (At low tide further west at Botanical Beach in Port Renfrew, purple sea stars and green anemones fill sandstone tide pools like natural aquariums!).
