Best Time to Visit Whistler: Ski Season (Nov to May), Summer Alpine Hiking (Jul to Sep) & Shoulder Savings

Timing your trip for February powder snow, June's 5-metre summit snow walls, or August's 25°C lake swimming and alpine hikes.

Whistler operates on two major peak seasons, Winter Ski Season and Summer Alpine & Lake Season, separated by two quiet, lower-priced shoulder windows in May/early June and October/early November. Because the valley floor sits at 675 metres while the mountain summits reach 2,284 metres, you can often experience two seasons on the exact same day.

1. Winter Ski & Snowboard Season (Late November to May)

  • December to March (Peak Powder & Village Lights): the festive holiday lights around Olympic Plaza turn on in late November; January, February and March deliver the deepest snowpack and best powder conditions across all 16 alpine bowls (with average valley temperatures around -5°C to +2°C, and -8°C to -12°C up on the peaks).
  • April & Early May (Spring Corn-Snow Skiing & The World Ski & Snowboard Festival): one of the best secrets in skiing. In April, days are long and sunny, hotel rates drop, and you can ski the upper mountain in the morning and golf or ride a mountain bike on the snow-free Valley Trail in the afternoon.

2. Summer Alpine Hiking, Bike Park & Lake Season (June to Mid-September)

  • Mid-June to Early July (The 'Snow Walls' Season): the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola and Peak Express Chairlift open for summer sightseeing, and in June you walk between towering 5-metre-tall ploughed snow walls at the top of the mountain before heading down to 22°C sunshine in the village.
  • Mid-July, August & Early September (Peak High-Alpine Hiking & Lake Swimming): by mid-July, the upper snowpack melts off the high trails, opening the legendary High Note Trail, Half Note Trail, Overlord Trail, Garibaldi Lake and Joffre Lakes. Afternoon temperatures in the village reach 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), and Lost Lake is warm for swimming.

3. Shoulder-Season Deals: May & October/November ('Dead Season' Dining Specials)

In May and October/early November, hotel rates drop sharply and Whistler's top fine-dining restaurants (including Araxi, Bearfoot Bistro and Rimrock Cafe) run multi-course 'Locals Dining Specials' (check current seasonal set-menu offers on each restaurant's website). (Note that the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola closes for autumn maintenance on weekdays between mid-September and late November; always check lift operating dates if visiting in October).
