Best Time to Visit Adana: April's Orange Blossom Carnival, Autumn Sun and Winter Warmth

Why April's Orange Blossom Carnival is one of the best weeks in Turkey, and why Adana shines from October to May.

Protected from cold northern Anatolian winds by the 3,500-metre wall of the Taurus Mountains and open to the warm Mediterranean Sea just 35 kilometres south, Adana enjoys one of the mildest, sunniest winter-and-spring climates in Europe and the Middle East. While coastal resort cities close down in winter, Adana's peak travel season runs from October right through May, reaching its exuberant climax in April.

Spring & The International Orange Blossom Carnival (March, April and May) is the single best time of the year to visit Adana. Every street, boulevard and park in the city is planted with thousands of bitter-orange trees (turunç). In early-to-mid April, every tree bursts simultaneously into white blossom, filling the entire city with the intoxicating perfume of neroli (orange blossom) under 24°C to 27°C skies. To celebrate, over a million people fill the streets for the week-long International Orange Blossom Carnival (Uluslararası Portakal Çiçeği Karnavalı, "Nisan'da Adana'da"), Turkey's first and largest street carnival, featuring a giant Saturday costume parade down Ziyapaşa and Atatürk Caddesi, open-air concerts in Merkez Park, river regattas and food stalls. (If visiting during Carnival week in April, book your hotel at least two months ahead).

Autumn & The Golden Boll Film Festival (October and November) is the second golden window. Daytime temperatures sit at a warm 24°C to 30°C, the summer humidity vanishes, September/October brings the Adana Golden Boll Film Festival (Altın Koza) and the multi-day Adana Taste Festival (Adana Lezzet Festivali) in Merkez Park, and late October turns the plane trees of Belemedik Valley bright gold.

Winter (December, January and February) never really arrives in Adana. Daytime temperatures average a sunny 15°C to 18°C with snow-capped Taurus peaks gleaming in the background above green palm trees, making winter an ideal time for walking Anavarza, Kapıkaya Canyon and the Kazancılar kebab grills without a crowd.

Summer (mid-June, July and August) is very hot and humid on the plain (35°C to 39°C); in summer, locals head up to the cool Taurus highlands of Pozantı / Tekir or out to the breezy shores of Seyhan Lake in the early evening. Check what to wear in Adana before packing.
